Soccer - Thomastown Utd Junior A side welcomed Callan Utd to United Park last Sunday in the Pat Maher Shield Quarter Final. It was Callan Utd first off the mark when they went a goal up int he first half but Thomastowns never say die attitude which has done the well all season came into effect when they battled all the way to the end of the second half and just before the final whistle were granted a penalty and Eamon Lyster stepped up and sent the Callan keeper the wrong way and blasted into the top right hand corner. Along came extra time and the master magician Marty Lawrence came to life and with his trickery bet the Callan keeper on his near post and put Thomastown into the lead for the first time in the game. Thomastown held out and won the game 2-1 and granted themselves a place in the Shield Semi final. Next Sunday Thomastown Utd are at home to Bridge Utd. All support welcome. The over 35’s took on Carlow Rovers in United Park last Sunday also and came away with a 3-1 win with thanks to Brendan Corr and a brace from John Dempsey. The Under 14’s travelled to Scanlon Park last Friday evening to take on Freebooters A. ‘booters took and early lead but United fought back hard to get the equaliser, It looked like the game was going to end up a draw but energetic Stevie Wemyss had other ideas and his endless running on the right wing made 2 more opportunities which Rory Monks made sure of and Thomastown grabbed all 3 points and placed themselves on top of the League.
