COLIN MCGREE TOURNAMENT - The annual Colin McGree Soccer Tournament will take place on this Sunday, March 24 at Soccer field at Woodview staring at 12.30pm. Registration is just €2 per child and all players between the age of 8 and 14 are welcome to take part. This tournament is held each year in remembrance of Colin around the time of his birthday since his death in 1996. Colin was a keen footballer himself and the event is now in its 17th year. All parents and supporters are encouraged to go along to see the youngsters play the game. Special guest will be CEO of the FAI who will present the trophies and medals to the Winners and Runners up.

DARTS - Freshford Darts League is now drawing to the final stages with the League at the semi-final stages. The B League semi final will be played next week with Kavanaghs and Farrells facing each other in McGraths on Sunday evening. The others semi final sees the Valley and Connollys . The A League will be played the following week.

The annual Ciaran Turner Darts Tournament was held recently in Kavanaghs and a good turn out. The winner of the Ladies was Jennifer Hickey and the mens final saw Stuart Comerford beat Michael Neary. The trophies and prizes were presented by the Turner family and Joe Colclough, one of the organizers who thanked all those who took part and helped in the running of the event and all who sponsored prizes. All proceeds go to Cancer Research.

TOTS TO TEENS - The Local Tots to Teen group are already preparing for next year’s production of “Shrek”. The Group will be happy to take on your child or children from 6- 18 years. So don’t delay to register and let you child join in the song dance fun and laughter on stage. JACKPOT WINNERS - The lucky winner of Spin the Wheel in Kavanaghs on Saturday night last was Beth Danaher and she won herself €50. Second prize went to Yvonne Barnaville. Last week’s lucky winner of the €300 Jackpot Paddy White, Inch and he will received his cheque on Saturday night. The Jackpot now stands at €350. The draw takes place each Saturday night as part of fund raising for St Lachtain’s GAA Club.

SOCCER NEWS - The Juniors had no game at the weekend after their great win against neighbours and table toppers Tullaroan the previous week and are still in contention for promotion with just two games remaining.

Training for U-9 boys continues with Gary Barnaville this week and every Saturday from 12 noon to 1pm. All boys form 5 – 9 age group are most welcome. The Club has decided to collect 2 euro from each child ( family rates for two or more) each week and this money will go towards the running and further development of the grounds.

Freshford Town Soccer Club held a very successful cabaret in Farrell’s on Saint Patricks night. All money will go toward the further development of the club. Chairman James Burke thanked all those who supported sponsored prizes or helped in any way.

Presentation of set of Jerseys was made to the Club by Pat Brennan Alarm System (full report next week).

POKER LEAGUE - There was a change at the top of the Freshford Poker league at week. It was Ml Brennan, Nigel Crosby and Joe Colclough who made up some ground on the leaders. Jimmy Kenny still leads as they head into week 11. Games takes place each Thursday night in Kavanaghs starting at 8.30pm.

GAA NEWS - Indoor hurling training has started back in the Community hall on Wednesday nights. Training for U-6’s and U-8’s starts at 6pm and training for U-10’s Saturday at 7pm. All players are asked to bring helmet, runners and €2 to cover cost of the hall.

St Lachtain’s GAA Membership is now due for renewal for the coming year. The club would like to ask at least one parent of each child to please become a member of your local club. There are a lot of benefits of becoming a member, you will able to see the enjoyment that your child gets from playing with the club, registered in Croke Park, draw for all Ireland tickets, for insurance purposes and for funding different activities during the year. Members of the committee will soon be doing the rounds collecting membership and we would urge you to be part of your local club. Players membership €100, Ordinary membership €40, Social membership €30, Bord na nOg membership €20.

Fun Easter hurling Camp 2013 - St Lachtain’s hurling club will hold their Easter hurling camp for boys and girls aged 7 to 13 years. The camp will be held on Tuesday 2nd April to Friday 5th of April. Camp will start each morning from 10am to 2pm in Pairc Lachtain Freshford. The cost of the camp is €30 per child for the first two children and €20 for the third child onwards. Fun Run - Preparations are under way for the annual Easter Fun run/ walk 5k and 10k. In aid of St Lachtain’s GAA/ Camogie clubs. Registration will be at 11-45am in Pairc Lachtain Freshford and races will start at 12.30 sharp. Registration costs, Family €20, Adults €10, Student €7, Child €5.

Freshford Community Market - Freshford community market is held each Saturday morning from 11am to 12.30. There is a good variation of locally produced products on offer, from home baking, jams, knit wear, handmade cards, chutneys, relishes and pork products. The group are looking for new stall holders to come along and sell their wares in the market. Come along, meet with friends and have a cuppa. VOLUNTEERS - Kilkenny Carlow Contract is a Community based voluntary organisation for older people covering Kilkenny and Carlow area and they are presently looking for additional volunteers to commit to one or two hours per week to befriend/visit older people who are living alone in the area. Late Sinead Woodward - The local area was saddened to learn of the death of Sinead Woodward (nee Monahan) late of Coolcashin, Gathabawn last week. Although she had been unwell for some time her death at the age of just 40 caused widespread shock and regret. She was a devoted wife mother and daughter and sympathy is extended to her husband Anthony, sons Callum and Luke, mother. brothers, sister, parents in law, aunts uncles, relatives and friends. Her remains were removed to Gathabawn Church for requiem Mass and burial took place in Tifeaghna Cemetery afterwards.

ENROL IN OASIS - As children numbers are at present very high in the Oasis Childcare Centre it is strongly advised that parents hoping to enroll their child/children in the Centre for next September should do so immediately. This includes 2013 Pre school places, CCS and CETS places. The Committee will of course do all they can to accommodate everyone’s needs but there are only a limited number of places they can provide and they operate on a first come first served policy.

Best wishes to St Lachtain’s senior Girls on their journey to Dubai this month to participate in the Dubai 7’s. A group of 11 girls from the club will make the trip, Aoife and Eileen Fitzpatrick, Marie O’Connor Captain, Jill Maher, Claire Dermody, Fiona Dowling, Aine and Sinead Connery Dee Delaney, Mairead Lalor and Ann Dalton. girls are heading to the Middle East to represent Kilkenny in the International Dubai Camogie Tournament – one of the largest GAA events outside of Ireland. The tournament is to be hosted by the Dubai Duty Free (DDF) Gulf Gaelic Games and will take place in the world class Emirates Sevens Complex in Dubai over this weekend Hopefully they can add an International title to their County, Leinster and All-Ireland achievements.

DANCE CLASSES - Social dance classes are held in St.Kierans Hall Johnstown each Wednesday evening at 8pm If you would like to learn to dance the Old time waltz, quick step, fox trot, jive etc., you are welcome to go along on any Wednesday evening. Congratulations to the school choir who took part in Peace Proms 2013 in ‘The Hub’, Cillín Hill, Kilkenny on Saturday, March 2. They did us proud and a wonderful night of music, song and even dance was had by all. Congratulations also to the boys and girls of Second Class who made their First Confession in St Lachtain’s Church recently. A big thank you to their parents, teachers and Fr Pat Comerford for all their hard work in helping the children prepare so well for the occasion.

SQUASH NEWS - Freshford Squash Club invite new members - male and female - are to the club. Outstanding membership must be paid to any club official immediately!

Children’s squash is now under way. Any parent/guardian interested in sending their child to the squash can contact Pat Morrissey for any information

The Club now have a brand new infra-red sauna fitted in the club This sauna is a unisex sauna and is for the use of any club member over the age of eighteen years. Its run on a meter and you must bring a towel with you when entering the sauna. As the club continues to expand, they hope to include gym equipment in the future. Renovations of the ladies showers will commence shortly.

PARISH MASSES - Morning Mass in Freshford Church each morning of the week is at 9.30am except on Mondays. Mass in Prague House on Monday at 9.30am St Catherine’s on Tuesday at 3pm. Tulla Church – Friday at 7.30pm.

Reconciliation ceremony will take place on this Wednesday evening at 7.30pm. with Fr. Willie Purcell and visiting priests for confessions.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in Prague house on Fridays from 10am to 5pm. All welcome.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT - Freshford Active Retirement Group meet every second Tuesday in the local Community Hall at 3pm with Bowling at McDonagh Junction on alternative Tuesdays . Late Jim Rafter - The death occurred last week of Jim Rafter late of Ballydowel Threecastles. The deceased who was advanced in years had been unwell recently. Both the deceased and his family are well known in the locality. He was predeceased some years ago by his wife. His remains were removed to Tulla Church and Burial took place in the adjoining Cemetery on Wednesday of last week. He is mourned by his sons, Gay, Gerry, Paul Tony, Mattie Christy, Noel, Patrick, Damien, daughter Judy, daughters in law, son in law, grandchildren, great grandchildren extended family, neighbours and friends.
