Mullinavat: Hurlers in county final

MULLINAVAT GAA - The under 21 hurlers reached the county final by virtue of a terrific win in Piltown last Sunday in the Southern final against a Mooncoin team who had won the title on the last occasions. Played in cloudy overcast conditions this was not going to be summer hurling. This game was a battle of the team who could best manage the conditions and do the simple things right. A good crowd had gathered for what would be an interesting contest. Mullinavat were there on the virtue of good wins over The Rower after extra time and a victory over Callan in the semi final. Mooncoin ground out a good win against a fancied Thomastown side and as reigning champions were possibly slight favourites for the title.

The game opened brightly for Mooncoin and they had the first point on the board compliments of a free by Ethan Ryan. Within a minute Mullinavat were on level terms thanks to a point by outstanding player John Walsh. Mooncoin regained the lead through another free and after 6 minutes led by 2 points to 1. The game changed in the 9th minute when Under 21 county panellist Ian Duggan shot to the net to put Mullinavat into the lead a lead which they would not lose for the rest of the game. Mullinavat outscored their opponents by 3 points to 1 and then John Walsh turned the game on its head when he latched onto a Liam Fennelly flick and sent the ball to the Mooncoin net. Both teams went point for point to the half time whistle and the scores at half time were Mullinavat 2-8 to Mooncoin 0-8.

With the second half starting everyone was waiting for the Mooncoin onslaught however it was Mullinavat who put their stamp on the game firing over 7 unanswered points in 13 minutes. Mooncoin were thrown a lifeline when they broke the Mullinavat defence for a goal. But in the next Mullinavat attack Ian Duggan smashed to the Mooncoin net and ended the game as a contest. From here on there was only one winner and Mullinavat tacked on a further 8 points from play and free’s. Mooncoin were the first and the last to score but unfortunately the scoreboard read Mullinavat 3-23 to Mooncoins 1-9 at the final whistle. It’s hard to imagine but this team are getting better with every performance. However there is one more fence to jump and that is the most important one and while they are capable nobody gets a county medal for nothing. A great team performance epitomised by the fact that 8 players on the team were on the score sheet.

Congratulations to the management team of Willie O Dwyer, Tony Duggan, Michael Aylward and Mick Carroll who have left no stone unturned in preparing this side this year. The team on the day was James Culleton,Mikie Jones, Joe Fennelly, Darren Kenneally, Brian Phelan,Thomas Aylward,Robbie Malone, Paudie Gahan, Simon Aylward, Mark Mansfield, Pat Mulhearn, Ian Duggan, Liam Fennelly, Ger Malone, John Walsh Subs Used: Brian Power, Ciarian Boyle, Mossie Jones, Conor Duggan.

Scorers were: Ian Duggan 2-4 Simon Aylward 0-7 John Walsh 1-4 Ger Malone 0-2 Mark Mansfield 0-2 Paudie Gahan 0-2 Pat Mulhearn 0-1 Brian Power 0-1
