The opening times for the county’s heritage sites run by the Office of Public Works (OPW) have been announced for 2012, with “Free Days” on the first Wednesday of each month set to continue.

The opening times for the county’s heritage sites run by the Office of Public Works (OPW) have been announced for 2012, with “Free Days” on the first Wednesday of each month set to continue.

Dunmore Cave and Kilkenny Castle will continue to be open all years, and St Mary’s Church in Gowran will be open from May 24 to August 29, according to the OPW. Jerpoint Abbey is open from early March to the start of December, with pre-booked tours available from December to March.

“The opening arrangements at all Heritage Sites nationwide have again been reviewed and I am pleased to announce that my office has managed to maintain the balance between conservation, preservation and tourism needs with the ongoing budgetary realities,” said Brian Hayes, minister of state with responsibility for the OPW. “I recently confirmed that the ‘Free Day’ on the first Wednesday of every month is to continue in 2012. I am delighted that I can continue with this initiative in these very challenging economic times.”
