LADIES SOCCER-Deen Celtic Ladies maintained their impressive start to the season with a deserved 2-1 win over Newpark in Kilkenny. Yvonne McGrath scored both goals to bring her tally to 4 from the two games played.

LIBRARY LATEST-Mystical Moments” is the title of the latest exhibition of paintings and photographs from Abbeyleix man John Byrne in Castlecomer Library.

The Afternoon Book Club-will meet on Wednesday 31st Oct at 2.30pm to discuss Neil Jordan’s “Mistaken”. All are welcome! Next date for the Kid’s Book Club is Tuesday 6th Nov at 3.30. Bring along a good book to share with the group! Open to boys and girls aged 8 – 12 years.

The Christmas Shoebox appeal- is now up and running, closing date Nov 12th.

SET DANCING- Set Dancing classes are continuing in Shortall’s Lounge. The Square every Tuesday night at 8 30pm. All are welcome including beginners. Come and dance and take a break from the daily diet of threatened budgetary cuts. You will be glad you did.

MRS. W. O’LOUGHLIN-The death has taken place after a brief illness of Winnie O’Loughlin, Newtown at Castlecomer District Hospital. She bore her illness with great dignity similar to the way she lived her life which was blessed with kindness, generosity and quietness, a true lady. A native of Borris in Ossory she came to work in Rings Drapery store before meeting and marrying her husband Sean and settling down to life in Newtown. She was laid to rest in Crosshill Cemetery after Requiem Mass celebrated in the Church of the Immaculate Conception by Msgr. Michael Ryan P.P. Castlecomer ; assisted by Fr. James Dollard P.P. Conahy ; Fr. Joe Campion C.C. Castlecomer ; Fr. Liam Shore P.E. Castlecomer. She is survived by her husband Sean ; sons Tony, James (USA) ; daughters Mary, Catherine ; sister Maura (USA) ; grandchildren ; other relatives and a host of friends.

NATIONAL CRAFTS-Castlecomer Discovery Park is inviting anyone interested in craft work to get involved in the forthcoming RDS National Crafts Competition. This is a touring exhibition where the work of Ireland’s leading craft makers will be on display from October 28th – November 18th in the Visitor Centre of the Park. The Park is inviting a small number of volunteers to be present during the exhibition from 10am – 4pm. This is a great opportunity for those with time on their hands who are interested in craft work or are content to read their books/paper. Lunch will be provided at Jarrow Café, along with an Annual Car Parking Pass to the Park, and support will be available at all times by the team of staff who work alongside the exhibition space. SPOOKY DISCO-Ballyragget Community Playground committee are holding their annual Halloween kids disco on Sunday the 28th of October. Fancy dress on the day. Thanks to Bridget O Shea who’ll be running her fabulous cake sale and DJ Nolan on the decks. Starts at 3 and finishing at 5 in CYMS Hall Ballyragget.We are looking forward to seeing all our spooky little friends on the day!

CHOIRBOYS ON TOUR-The members of Castlecomer Male Voice Choir are heading west for a Choral Competition in Sligo. Departure date is Friday November 9th the party return on Sunday 11th. There are some seats available, contact Martin Walsh on 086 – 8101312.

The Choir host a Table Quiz in Bollards Lounge on November 2nd. Tables of 4 cost €20. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

We are looking for additional volunteers to commit to one hour per week to befriend /visit older people who live alone in your area.
