FAREWELL MASS - The parish church was packed to capacity on Sat. Aug 4 for the Farewell and Thanksgiving Mass to celebrate the six years Fr. Paddy Byrne ministered in the parish. Parishioners from Newtown and Ballinkillen joined the community to attend Mass, pay their respects, show their appreciation and say farewell to Fr. Paddy.

The Pentecost Ladies Choir, Male Choir and Folk Choir sang at the Mass and Paul Mahon, a friend of Fr. Paddy, sang “The Old Man” at the end of Mass.

Mass was celebrated by Fr. Declan Foley, P.P. In his homily he spoke of Fr. Paddy’s deep spirituality and love of the Eucharist, his energy and how he enriched the lives of everyone who knew him through his involvement with our young people, encouraging them and supporting them; visiting the elderly and the sick in their homes and in hospital. Fr. Declan praised Fr. Paddy’s gifts of communication through his writing and on local and national radio. Through the media he reached out to so many people way beyond the parish who contacted him for prayer and help.

He said he is a person who sees good in everyone and could never say “no” to anybody who contacted him, whether to help out with problems or sing for charity

He thanked Fr. Paddy for his tremendous work in the parish and for organising the Dawn Mass on Mt. Leinster on Easter Sunday morning and helping with the Annual Novena. On behalf of himself, Fr. Tom Bambrick and the community he wished him many years of good health and a happy and fulfilled life in Portlaoise.

After Mass refreshments were served in the Railway House Restaurant where everybody had an opportunity to say their farewells to Fr. Paddy. He takes with him the good wishes and affection of everyone who knew him in his six years in Bagenalstown.
