OPEN EVENING - All parents guardians and anyone interested in their child receiving childcare are invited to go along to an enjoyable informative social evening at the Oasis Childcare Centre on Wednesday 22nd August from 7 to 9pm. There will also be some food and refreshments and you can meet all the staff and have your questions answered regarding fees, childcare, childrens programmes, state support for those on Social Welfare , CETS and their new Afterschool service beginning in September. If you can’t make it you can drop in after the 20th August when the Centre will be re-opened after their holidays.

Marathon - If you would be interested in participating in the Dublin City Marathon you are asked to please contact Paul Dowling on 087 6657366 for details. The group will meet twice weekly in preparation. All proceeds will be in aid of Prague House.

GAA NEWS - The U16 Hurlers had a good win over Clara in the championship played at Jenkinstown on Sunday morning last winning on a scoreline of 1-17 to 1-11. They now play Tullaroan in the County semi final which is fixed for August 29th but is to be confirmed.

The Intermediate hurlers had a rather facile win over Crumlin of Dublin in Pairc Lactain on Saturday last. Training continues for this group as arranged

Meanwhile the Junior A hurlers were pipped at the post on Tuesday evening last when they lost out by the narrowest of margins to Young Ireland of Gowran on a score of 1-11 to 1-10 at Palmerstown. This brought an end to their campaign for 2012.

The Minor hurlers had a fine win over James Stephens on Monday evening last week in the league semi final. They are due to play the Rower Inistioge in the final on Saturday evening next at 7pm at Bennettsbridge ( see fixtures for confirmation)

In the U8 Blitz at Kilmanagh at the weekend the local boys beat Graigue Ballycallan, John Lockes and the Fenians. This team travels to Croke Park on Monday 20th August at the invitation of the GAA for “Croke Park Activity Day”. The panel includes B.Dermody, J.Comerford, J.Cantwell, J.Whitty, G.Condon, M.Durnan, C.Donnelly J.Bergin, D.Hayden,C.Hickey,S.Counihan, L.Freaney, E.Landers, C.Bowden, S.Dowling, R.Cord. This group of players are managed by David Condon and Brian Whitty and also assisted by Martin Walsh and Paul Dowling. The group will play a team from Offaly in a game of 40minutes.

Best wishes -to local lads Brian Kennedy and Jimmy Meagher who are part of the Kilkenny Intermediate team who face Galway in the All Ireland Semi final on Saturday in Tullamore.

RACE NIGHT- St. Lachtains Hurling Club is holding a Race night at St. James Park on Friday evening the 31st August. Tickets cost €10 with valuable prizes to be won. Ticket Sellers will be calling to your door and the Club would be obliged for your support if possible..

FRESHFORD COMMUNITY MARKET - Freshford Community Market which started up in the last few weeks and has moved to Saturday morning is very successful and is growing in statute. The market is held each Saturday in the Community Hall from 11am to 1 pm and is growing each week. It is hoped that the number of stalls will increase over the coming weeks and the variation of goods on offer also This is a community initiative so go along and support your local Community and have a tea or coffee and some homemade scones or cakes all locally produced. SOCCER - Training has resumed for the Junior soccer team in preparation for the forthcoming season and will continue every Wednesday evening at the Sportsfield at Woodview at 7.30pm. The team will play in the 2nd Division this season. They played Orchard villa and St.Johns in challenge games recently.

Training resumes for the new season for U11’s & U12’s (last years U10’s & U11’s) this Thursday 16th at 6pm at Woodview.  There will also be registration and a parents meeting at 7pm.  All parents are asked to please attend a meeting to discuss some new rules and changes for the new season and to register the boys (€20 per player).  Any new players are welcome to join these age groups or other older age groups.

Work is continuing in the pitch at present for the forthcoming season. You can follow the Club on facebook for up to date forthcoming events.

Lotto - There was no Jackpot winner in last weeks KDL Lotto or no match 3 The Jackpot stands at €7.800.

Cirocal Gaelach -The Club held a lovely evening recently to celebrate the first year of the Ciorcal. Joan O’Donovan won the trath na gceist and a great Comhru finished the evening. The Ciorcal will recommence again in med September.

SYMPATHY Mrs. Teresa Young , Parnell Street, Kilkenny who died at the weekend was sister of Mrs. Polly Bergin, Kilkenny Street, Freshford. Burial took place on Monday in Folkstown Cemetery following Requiem Mass in St. Mary’s Cathedral. Sympathy is extended to all her family.

Sympathy is also extended to Mrs. Noreen Kenny of Grange Ballyragget and of local Carroll’s Pharmacy on the recent death of her father Michael Kenny.

UPPERCOURT RESTAURANT - The newly refurbished luxurious Loop Restaurant at Uppercourt Manor, Freshford opened recently to the public and is open each Sunday for meals from 12.30 to 5pm. with great quality and value. The Restaurant is also open on booking for other evenings with choice of menu available. They also cater for parties, communion confirmation or other functions. BUS TO SEMI FINAL- A bus will travel from Freshford to the All Ireland Semi final Kilkenny –v- Tipp in Croke Park on Sunday next. Names should be handed into Kavanaghs asap or before Friday morning at the latest.

VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY- The local Branch of St.Vincent de Paul Society meet on the last Thursday evening of each month and are very active at present moment. For help or any information you can contact them on their private number on 085-2758136

Congratulations- go out to Jerry and Bertilla Doheny of Woodview Freshford on their 30th Wedding Anniversary. The happy couple celebrated the event at a party with family and friends in Farrells Function room on Saturday night last.

CAMOGIE NEWS-St. Lachtains Senior camogie girls qualified for the 2012 league final which will be played on the 31st August with a narrow win over Thomastown in Palmerstown on recently winning on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-13!

The Un16 girls quarter final game against St. Anne’s has been rescheduled for this Wed 15th August.
The Club wish to thank all who supported their fundraising Cake Sale recently in the Community Hall! There will be a Clothes Collection at the end of August, Please take note for all interested in cleaning out those wardrobes!

 ACTIVE RETIREMENT GROUP - Freshford Active Retirement Group meet in the local Community Hall each Tuesday at 3pm. New members are always most welcome. Tai Chi Classes are now closed for the summer months and classes will resume in September.

St. Lachtain’s N. S. - The process of enrolling new pupils for the school year 2012/2013 is currently under way in St. Lachtain’s N.S., Freshford and will continue into the summer holidays. Afterschool Service -Oasis, Freshford & District Child Centre Oasis Childcare Centre will be providing an Afterschool service from next September 1.30 - 5.45. The service will include picking up your child at the school, bringing them to Oasis where they will receive a hot meal followed by supervised study for approximately 1/2 hour. The remainder of the time will follow an exciting programme of activities indoor and outdoors. Fee: €13 per day. If you are on a social welfare payment you would be eligible for Subvention (CCS) Oasis when the charge would be €3 per day for the complete service.
