Dungarvan: Man versus machine in charity challenge

CHARITY CHALLENGE-There was an air of excitement and expectancy in the village last Saturday afternoon. Reason ; A fundraising event in which local man Eddie Fenlon of 7777777 Taxi’s challenged Toss Kane to a road race. What was unique about this challenge was that Eddie was on foot while Toss drove his Vintage David Brown Cropmaster Tractor. To give a sense of balance to the race a handicap system was introduced .Eddie had to complete the 10K circuit once, Toss on his tractor had to complete 3 rounds of the same circuit. It was a gruelling task as there are many hills on the route. There was great tension as the tractor passed the starting point on it’s third trip.An excited crowd waited with bated breath, watching for signs of the emerging competitors.Reports were coming in that Eddie was ahead ,and loud cheers greeted him as he crossrd the winning line to win the challenge in a very fine time of 53 Minutes. Of course all this was part of a fundraising effort by Toss and Agnes Kane for their beloved charity,The O’Neill Centre in Kilkenny. However that was not the end of the charity event. At 5-30pm a convoy of Vintage cars and tractors left the village and journeyed to Gowran Village via the Demesne, on to Dunbell, Tullaherin and back to Dungarvan. To top off the day a cabaret was held in the Ouncel House. Toss and Agnes offer their sincere thanks to all who subscribed to the charity and all who helped to make the event such a success.
