SOCCER NEWS - Freshford Town Junior side had a good win on Sunday morning last when they beat River Rangers at home. From the Kick off it was Paul Guinan who was taking control of the game and he played a big part in Freshford’s opener. Fionn Lawlor sent in a corner from the left which was only half cleared by a Rangers defender and Guinan then volleyed the ball towards the goal and it was Jonathan Doheny who popped up on the six yard box to head the ball to the net. The local lads continued to control the game with Fionn Lawlor dominating midfield and went in at the break 1-0 up. The second half was a similar story with the home side having all the play but with the Rangers side looking to break away it was up to Shane McGree in goal to prevent Rangers equalizing on the hour mark. On the 70th minute the local lads got their deserved second goal when Lawlor crossing to the far post where Lloyd Bassett headed back into the box and it was Guinan who buried the ball in the roof of the net from eight yards out. More scoring chances followed from Liam Hickey and Robbie Dowling but they failed to convert and with just five minutes remaining the referee awarded a penalty to River Rangers. The Rangers striker made it 2-1 which made for a tense last few minutes but the Freshford defence held firm for a deserved win.

In the schoolboys division The U11 boys playing their first game since early December, put in a terrific team effort to beat Evergreen Utd 3-0 at Woodview last Saturday, ensuring their third win in four games. Freshford were on top right from the kick off and played excellent football throughout. Alan Rafter got the first goal from close range when he finished a great move set up by Cormac Rafter who had a great first half. A few minutes later Alan Rafter laid the ball off to Cian Franey who beat several defenders before tucking it away as Freshford started to dominate proceedings. Cormac Rafter got Freshfords third goal before half time when he calmly finished a great move down the left by Mark McCarthy and Dean Brophy. At half time a few changes were made as a lot of the boys were feeling under the weather but whilst Freshford didn’t add any more score they struck the woodwork several times and went close numerous times. A great team performance ensured a comfortable win and best for the winners were attacking midfielders Cian Franey and Cormac Rafter with captain on the day Mark McCarthy putting in a super first half performance at left back, a different role from his more usual role in goals this season.
