SCHOOLS WIN - Tommy O’Brien Schools Cup final between Lisdowney and Graigue/Skeough was last Saturday. Lisdowney were missing James Phelan and Gary O’Sullivan from their starting line out, but this was not to deter them. It was a low scoring match. Lisdowney scored only 1:2 in the first 10 minutes and did not score again for 30 minutes, while all Graigue/ Skeough’s scores of the first half came from frees. The score at half time 1:2 to 0:3 to Lisdowney. The only scores in the first 20 minutes were 2 frees for the Southern side and 1 free for Lisdowney, but Eoin Delaney scored a goal for Lisdowney with just five minutes left and Graigue/Skeough had one late point. The game finished on a score of 2:3 to 6 points and captain David O’Carroll picked up the cup for Lisdowney.

CAREERS IN MUSIC - is a summer workshop run under the aegis of Portlaoise Comhaltas with the support of Spink branch which includes Abbeyleix in it’s catchment area. The pilot project which is funded by Laois Partnership Ltd will take place at Abbeyleix Heritage House and is open to suitable young musicians who may or may not be members of Comhaltas.

The aim is to : (a)broaden the capacity of musicians who are attending secondary school through exposure to the commercial and production side of the business as well as performance under the guidance of professional performers acknowledged by the industry as innovative and successful.

(b)To seek accreditation at FETAC level 5 for modules entitled Music Theory & Practice and Music Industry Studies.

(c)To cater for a group approximately twenty five to thirty teenagers who have already demonstrated good proficiency in music/singing performance, by developing composition and orchestration skills necessary for a successful group/band.

LISDOWNEY SCHOOLS HURLING LEAGUE - Congratulations to the Lisdowney Schools Hurling Team who have made it to a second final this year, the Top Oil Roinn C Final, which is due to be played this Saturday in Nowlan Park, after defeating Glenmore in the semi-final last Wednesday in Danesfort.

Lisdowney were firmly in the driving seat in the first half of the game against Glenmore. Niall Brennan opened the scoring with a point and a fabulous goal. David O’Carroll then found the back of the net before Glenmore scored their first point from a free. Niall and David followed up with a point each and Glenmore clocked up two more points from frees. Niall Brennan scored another brilliant goal. Glenmore’s point from a free left the half time score at Lisdowney: 3-3; Glenmore: 0-4.

Lisdowney continued to clock up the scores in the second half, with Niall Brennan finding the back of the net early on, followed by three points for Glenmore – one from a free. Niall then blasted the sliotar into the back of the net. This was followed shortly afterwards by a point from David and two further points from Glenmore, securing Lisdowney’s place in the final. Final score: Lisdowney: 5-5; Glenmore: 0-9.

JUNIOR A HURLING - Lisdowney lined out against St Martin’s last Saturday in Lisdowney, Lisdowney were well in control from the off, and the final whistle blew on a scoreline of 2:16 to 1:10.

UNDER 14 HURLING UNDER 14 LEAGUE - On Monday 5th, the Bank Holiday, Lisdowney met Paulstown. All the play was in the Lisdowney forward line for the first fifteen minutes,to lead by 2:3 to no score. It was a full 20 minutes before paulstown eventually got a point from a free, but Lisdowney were still attacking hard.

Paulstown’s only score from play in the half came from a tight ball in the corner and was perfectly directed between the posts, but lisdowney’s reaction was a point to bring the half time score up to 2:6 to 2 points.

Lisdowney were first to score with a point, then a point from a free, and a pass from a Paulstown free gained them a goal. Midway through the second half both sides were struggling for scores, but the last quarter gave Lisdowney another goal and 8 points to Paulstown’s 4 points. Final score was 3:13 to 1:6 for Lisdowney.

SCHOOL CAMOGIE - The girls travelled to Bennettsbridge again last Tuesday to play the Rower in the County Semi final. They were defeated in this match.

LOCAL HISTORY GROUP - The Fassidinin History Society in Castlecomer have invited representatives from all Kilkenny local history groups for a get-together in Castlecomer Library on Sunday 1st July at 3pm.
