Bagenalstown: Welcome Fr Joe

WELCOME TO OUR NEW CURATE - We extend a very warm welcome to our new curate, Fr. Joe O’Neill, who has taken up residence in the Royal Oak Road. Fr. Joe is a native of Ballybrittas, Co. Laois. His parents Joe and Lily moved to live in Portarlington eight years ago. He has one brother and two sisters. Fr. Joe studied for a mechanical engineering qualification in what was then the Austin Waldron Regional College (now Carlow Institute of Technology). He started his religious formation with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Galway City but later transferred to become a Diocesan priest and continued his studies at St. Patrick’s College in Carlow where Fr. Paddy Byrne and Fr. Kevin Walsh were fellow students. Fr. Joe was ordained in l998 and his first appointment was to Knockbeg College where he served as chaplain. In 2002 he was transferred to Portlaoise as a curate where he ministered for eight years. In September 2011 Fr. Joe took a sabbathical year and worked in the Diocese of Dallas in Texas. He returned to Ireland in July last.

ST. ANDREW’S G.F.C. - St Andrews seniors were unlucky on Saturday August 18, when they were narrowly defeated in Dr Cullen Park against Kilbride on a scoreline of 3-7to 15pts. This defeat means that they now face an uphill battle to stay up senior. Their next opposition is Old Leighlin on the weekend dated September 15; time and venue to be confirmed. The U21s bowed out of the championship when they were defeated by Eire Og on a scoreline of 10pts to 6pts. The club committee would like to thank Cody’s Solicitors for their kind sponsorship of the new home jerseys, their sponsors and supporters for their continued support. Weekly lotto tickets are available from any committee member priced at €2. The club will be also holding their annual draw for a chance to win 2 tickets to the All-Ireland Hurling or Football finals.

SENIOR CITIZENS - Fenagh Newtown Nurney Senior Citizens group has tickets on sale at present. The draw will take place at the Fenagh Steam Rally on Sept. 9. Prizes €200, €150, €100, €50 and numerous other prizes. They cost €2 per line and are available from any member of the committee. If you have books mounting up in your home which have been read, why not donate them to the club for their book stall at the Steam Rally. They would really appreciate them.

INTERNET WORKSHOPS - Bagenalstown Family Resource Centre is offering 6 hour of Internet Workshops for as little as €1.00. The course is designed for beginners; you will learn how to set up and use email, search the internet, upload pictures to your computer and a whole lot more. YOGA FOR ALL - An 8 week Flow Yoga Course will be held at Bagenalstown Family Resource Centre, Royal Oak Road, commencing Wed. Sept. 12 at 7.30pm. Cost €80. To book contact Marian at 086 3082450.

WOMEN’S GROUP - Would you like to join the Family Resource Centre’s new women’s group? Are you interested in arts and crafts, cooking, dressmaking and music? If you are, then why not join the group which meets on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm to 9pm, starting in September with a six week jewellery making course. Cost €20 for six week course.

WEDNESDAY LUNCH CLUB - If you are aged 50 or over and would like to enjoy a delicious meal every Wed. from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, why not go along to the Family Resource Centre and enjoy a home-cooked meal along with a game of bingo, cards. Transport can be provided within the town area.

BEREAVED - Deepest sympathy to Mrs. Helen Doyle, 35 Eastwood, Bagenalstown, whose sister, Margaret, died suddenly in Brisbane, Australia last week, at the early age of 53 years and to Mrs. Marie Power, Kilgreaney, whose mother Peggy Malone, Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny died recently. May they rest in peace.

AGM - The AGM of Bagenalstown Swimming Pool will take place On Tues. Aug. 28 at 8pm. at the pool. All welcome.

PARISH YEARBOOK - All groups, clubs, schools and organisations within the parish are invited to submit articles for inclusion in the Yearbook. Personal contributions are most welcome.
