Annual Field This Sunday - On the first Sunday in September all roads will lead to Sevenhouses coursing grounds rather than Croke Park (we are delaying this years trip by a week). The occasion will be the annual Danesfort Parish Field Day. Once again this years event will be done in partnership with our local Danesfort GAA club and will feature all the usual fun-filled family favourites and a number of new attractions for 2012: Roll the Bale, Hair Braiding and Face Painting and Guess the Personalities. This year will for the first time the Mother and Toddler group and the Going Strong group will have stands to highlight their excellent activities in the parish. George Candler will be our auctioneer on the day as we hope to get great prices for donated loads of firewood, hay and straw. For those on the hunt for a bargain we will have Bric a Brac, fruit, vegetables and home baking.There are also excellent prizes in our raffle and on our Wheel of Fortune.Your refreshment needs will be catered for in our Tea Room, shop and BBQ As ever, extra help is always needed and if you think that you can please contact Chairman John Sullivan (086 38964624) and Secretary Anna Corr.(086 0744675).
GAA- Danesfort’s Robbie Walsh captained the Kilkenny Intermediate Team in their All Ireland Hurling Championship Semi-final against Galway in Tullamore , last Saturday week. Level at half time (0-10 to 1-7) Kilkenny enjoyed the better of the second half with impressive displays throughout the field and some excellent free taking from Rory Hickey who contributed 0-13 from placed ball. Kilkenny were victorious on a 0-21 to 1-13 scoreline and will now take on Tipperary in the final on Saturday September 1. Danesfort’s Paul Murphy put in a great performance for the Kilkenny Senior team when they overwhelmed Tipperary in the All-Ireland senior championship semi final in Croke Park last week. Paul and the Hogan brothers, Richie and Paddy hope to add to theirAll Ireland medal tally on Sunday week when they take on Leinster Champions, Galway in the All Ireland final.
CYCLE - Kells Angels Charity Cycle will take place on Saturday September 1. The ‘Kells Angels Charity Cycle’ aims to raise funds to support the establishment of a badly needed Cancer Support Centre in Kilkenny City called Cois Nore. There are options for everyone including longer routes for adults and seasoned cyclists and shorter routes for families and children and those who haven’t been out on a bike in a while. You can view all the options on the Cycling Routes page on their web site www.kellsangels.ie or on Facebook . If you would like to partake, please choose your route and register on the Take Part page. A registration fee applies and we also encourage you to request a sponsorship card in order to raise as much as we can for Cois Nore. If cycling isn’t your thing, not to worry - come along to the Kells Family Fun Day where you can enjoy a delicious BBQ and Music as well as a Cake Sale and plenty of entertainment for children including a Duck Race, Face painting and lots more. Later on there is also a Shave or Dye Event at 8pm.

TETRATHLON - Huge success once again for Cian Drennan, Burnchurch and his team mates Mark Collins, Reuben Pim and Mike Healy who returned with gold winning the Boys Intermediate Tetrathlon Championships which was held in Hartpury College Gloustershire England on the 21 st -23 rd of August.A huge achievement competeing against teams from Scotland England and Wales. The boys from Warrington Pony Club rode a testing challenging and technical cross country course very well with Cian doing the fastest boys time cross country and also was placed in third position in the swimming phase. Rosettes and Medals were presented by The Tetrathlon Committee of The U.K. Pony Club. A word of thanks to Walshes Toyota, Michael Lyng Motors. Axa insurance, Callan Co Op and Euro Farm for their kind sponsorship to the boys for their trip.
KARATE - Classes in Karate for Kids will resume in Danesfort Community Centre on Tuesday September 4 and will run on an on-going basis every Tuesday from 4pm - 5pm. The After-School Children Only Karate Class is for boys and girls aged between 4 years and 12 years old. Members of the club will be taught karate techniques and self-defence drills. There will also be a strong focus on physical fitness. Plenty of fun and games will also be incorporated in to the classes. Karate has many proven benefits for kids both physical and mentally. CRAFTS - Summer Teen Crafts: The teen craft classes finished on a high note last Wednesday when the students displayed their 8 weeks of crafts and talents for families and friends in the Danesfort Community Centre. Following the success of this first years’ summer camp, it is certainly one to pencil into your diary for next year. The organisers wish to thank all who participated and helped throughout the summer, in particular, the Going Strong Club, who, were so generous with their time and talents. On Thursday the teens had a wonderful day at the Dunmore East Adventure Centre and were accompanied by members of the Going Strong Club.
MOTHER AND TODDLER - Danesfort Mother and Toddler Group Resumes on Monday September 10 at 10.30am in Danesfort Community Centre. The Group will also have a stand at the annual Field Day on Sunday September 2 and Dympna Maher will be there to meet with parents and toddlers who might like to join the group. YOGA- Yoga classes will resume in Danesfort Community Centre on Tuesday September 4 and Thursday September 6 at 10.00am. The demand for classes is growing rapidly due to the enormous health benefits in practicing yoga. We now know that regular yoga increases your overall flexibility. It improves muscle tone, breathing and body posture awareness. Yoga is for everyone. If you have never practiced yoga before, and would like to try it, please drop in. SCOUTS - The 15th Kilkenny Fort Grange Scouts new term will commence this September. Cub Scouts first meeting for the new term will be the 3rd of September 3 from 6:45 - 8:00 pm; Beaver Scouts first meeting for the new term will be the 6th of September 6 from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. GROUP - Are you a parent of a disabled child? Would you like to meet with a group in a similar situation and learn to be a more effective voice for your child? Droichead Family Resource Centre will host an Empowering Parents training course in partnership with DESSA. The Empowering Parents Programme seeks to support parents to acquire the knowledge and skills to effectively advocate on behalf of their child and will run over a 6 week period commencing Wednesday September 19. TIME OUT - Time out for Women is a social and educational project for Women in Callan and its hinterland that provides training on a wide range of informational and practical topics. Some of the subjects that will be covered include: Calligraphy, Woodwork for Beginners, Financial Advice Workshop(MABS), Christmas Flower arranging, Stress Management (relaxation), Job Search work shop (VEC), Dietician Workshop (Health Promotion Unit), Pilates, Fitness for women & computers. This programme will be run 2 days per week over 10 weeks. It will run every Wednesday and Thursday (school term) from 9.30am - 12.30pm. The course will begin Wednesday October 3 until Thursday December 13.There will be 16 people on the programme so places are limited. DIY - Do you want to improve on doing DIY jobs in your own home? Homecare and Maintenance Programme: Level 4. On completion of this programme participants will be able to understand and demonstrate basic plumbing, electrical works, tiling, painting, and decorating skills which will empower people to carry out tasks in their own home or create an opening for them to carry out further training. The course will be run over 5 Tuesdays and will begin early October. This project is funded by County Kilkenny Leader Partnership. The cost will be €20 per participant.
