Bennettsbridge: Great hurling at under 10 blitz

U-10 TOURNEY - There was great excitement in the Bennettsbridge GAA field on Saturday when ten U-10 teams took part in a special tournament. The first match was between, Bennettsbridge v Barrow Rangers and some great fare was produced. The 2nd match saw St Martin’s pitted against Gowran and here again the youngsters gave their all. In the 3rd match, St Lactains played James Stephen’s(Red) with some great hurling exchanges. The fourth match was between Danesfort and James Stephen’s(Green) and the youngsters were cheered on by family and supporters. The final match between Graignamanagh and Thomastown was again an exciting spectacle. The overall winning team was Thomastown but all the teams gave great performances.Each player received a memento of the day with presentations being made by former inter county players, Seamus Cleere, Noel Skehan and James McGarry. Robert Lennon and Enda Morrissey also presented some mementos to the young players. Thanks went to Ben Tynan who acted as referee for the tournament and to all who helped in the organising of the day.

TREK FOR OXFAM - There is much local interest in the forthcoming 50km Trek for Oxfam which takes place on September 1st. Mary Blanchfield and Nuala Sharpe will take part in the event together with colleagues from the Crafts Council of Ireland Their fundraising efforts received a major boost when some enterprising local ladies , namely Eileen McGarry and Trish Walsh organised a darts event in Lalor’s Corner House with great success. Thanks went to sponsors of prizes and supporters on the night. DRIVE FOR LIAM - The “Drive for Liam” quiz 2012 will be held in O’Donnell’s Bar on this Thursday night at 9pm. The quiz has been a popular event for the past number of years and is promoted by Carlow/Kilkenny Radio. Participants are asked to be seated by 8.30pm to enable the night to run smoothly. Entry is table of four €20.00. Bennettsbridge GAA club urges supporters to get behind the quiz as the club will benefit from the night.

SCOUTS SUMMER CAMP - Bennettsbridge scouts spent an enjoyable week on Summer Camp in Faithlegg. A fun-packed week was enjoyed by all with activities from.surfing in Tramore and a visit to the Shielbaggan Outdoor Education Centre, the highlight of the week.The group travelled to the Wexford centre by ferry and they were looked after by Aidan Doran, Shielbaggan representative. Aidan is a former leader of the Bennettsbridge Scout group and has contributed, together with his brother, Shane and late father, John Doran, in a big way to scouting. On Tuesday the group played host to the cubs who came for an overnight stay and on wednesday, parents were invited to come for a visit to Faithlegg.

SCOUTING NEWS - All Scouting Sections will be restarting the week of the 3rd September 2012. Scouts on Monday 3rd at 7.30pm and finishing at the earlier time of 9pm, Beavers on Tuesday 4th at 7pm; Cubs on Thursday 6th at 7pm.  Looking forward to a great Scouting year.

KARATI - Bennettsbridge Karate Club - Classes in Karate for Kids will resume in Bennnettsbridge Community Centre every Monday from 3.15pm - 4pm starting Monday 3rd September 2012. To enrol your child in the classes please call  086 3668669.

The ‘After-School’ Kids Only Karate Class is for boys and girls aged between 4 years and 12 years old. Members of the club will be taught karate techniques and self-defence drills. There will also be a strong focus on physical fitness. Plenty of fun and games will also be incorporated in to the classes.

ART GROUP - A meeting of the Bennettsbridge Art Group will be held in the Community Centre on Saturday, 1st September at 12pm. It is hoped that all members will attend as a decision has to be made regarding future activities.
