Ballyragget: First ever Irish man to win the Rene Baltus Wissel trophy for fishing

WHAT A CATCH - Ballyragget man Paddy Phelan, 3 Smiths Road has become the first ever Irish man to win the Rene Baltus Wissel – Trofee for fishing in Holland. Paddy who has been going over to Holland for the last 14 years and has only entered the competition twice, once in 2011 and this year 2012 when he landed the big one. The competition which is a one day sea fishing affair took place in Denhelder, Holland. Twenty-five locals and Paddy set off early i the morning and fished until late afternoon on the boat “The Rival”. Each contestant was only allowed one rod each. Paddy who was the out-right winner landed 60lbs of mackerel when his nearest rival landed only 35lbs – delighted with his success Paddy will be returning to Holland next year to defend his title – Well done Paddy and Good Luck. FoROIGE - On Friday the 9th and 16th of November between 7.30 till 9pm registration for the coming Foroige year will commence in the Ballyragget C.Y.M.S hall. We would like to welcome all previous members back, along with new members and new leaders. To become a member you must be between the age of 12- 18 years. We also require new leaders for this forthcoming Foroige year. If you are enthuastic, committed, with an interest in Youth work please drop in on the 9th or the 16th of November for a chat. UPDATE ALCOHOL BYE LAWS -A resolution was passed at Electoral Area Level to include Ballyragget in the Bye Laws on Prohibition of Consumption of Alcohol in Public Places. Cllr. Maurice Shortall says the Alcohol Bye Laws are similar to those implemented in 2010 which cover Castlecomer, Callan, Thomastown and Graiguenamanagh. “The next stage is to bring the resolution before the full County Council meeting for approval” said Cllr. Shortall.

WELCOME RESURFACING HIGH STREET - The recent re-surfacing at High Street, Ballyragget though long overdue is certainly welcome. Cllr. Maurice Shortall says the re-surfacing was financed through the Development Levies Contribution Fund and the money was prudently set aside for the works.

BALLYRAGGET CHARITY TRACTOR CLASSIC RUN - Forget the economic woes when the cause is right communities will always respond. The 7th Annual CTCR Ballyragget Classic Charity Run is once again testament to the wonderful support warmly received by an army of volunteers across the counties of Kilkenny, Carlow, Laois and Offaly. The organisers would like to say a big thank you to all who contributed with an impressive €18,004.56c collected on route for Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin. Mr. Gerry Cully, Community Fundraising Manager, Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin was in the Canon Malone Hall, Ballyragget on Thursday to accept the wonderful donation. “In the name of the Little Patients I want to express sincere gratitude to all involved in this community event. It’s largely because of support like yours that enables us to be in a position to provide quality of care to all who avail of our services. This money at your request will go into the Research Department where important work continues in the areas of Cancer; Diabetes and Obesity. Our fundraising is by and large focused in the areas of Cancer and Cardiac facilities. St. Johns Ward has been completely refurbished and a 25 bed single unit is underway for Cardiac sufferers. In all some €8 million is being invested. Continuous improvement is key to patient care and in June 2013 work on a brand new Bone Marrow Unit will commence.” Finally Mr. Culley extended an open invitation to all involved in the fundraising to visit Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children to see at firsthand how well of the monies raised was being spent. To date, CTCR Ballyragget Classic Charity Run has raised over €200,000 for the hospital and great credit is due to all involved.
