HANDBALL - The 2013 county handball championships commenced last weekend with several local boys and girls hoping to continue the successes of recent years.

The Clogh Club had three county winners last week. In Girls Under 14 Singles Sorcha Delaney, Girls Under 17 Singles Denise Love and Boys Under 15 Singles Marc Purcell were successful.

HURLING CLUB AGM - Cloneen Hurling Club will begin preparations for another busy season at the AGM which will take place on Sunday 27 January at 5pm.

NEW STRUCTURE - With the demise of the old style FAS scheme and the introduction of Solus the Board of management of the local scheme plans some restructuring of its own. Three vacancies already exist on the board and it is hoped to fill these with new members at the AGM in April. In fact it is hoped to expand the board further by inviting all the sponsoring to put forward two nominees.

An application has already been submitted for a continuation of the local scheme which employs 25 workers, a supervisor and an assistant supervisor making it the biggest employer in the parish. Funding for the project comes from the Department of Social Protection contributing nearly a half millionn euro a year.
