PLAYGROUP WALK - The children from Ballyragget Community Playgroup and Montessori in Chapel Avenue recently took part in a sponsored Big Toddle for Barnardos to help raise much needed funds for disadvantaged children. The children, their parents and helpers enjoyed a walk through the town before returning to the Centre for light refreshments.
The walk was part of our on-going formal training with Siolta, the Quality Assurance Programme and incorporated Community Involvement and Parents and Families. Siolta is a recognised national and international quality framework for early childhood care and education in Ireland and we are amongst only 4 childcare facilities in Kilkenny lucky enough to be chosen to deliver the framework. To support our Siolta training, we implement the full Aistear Early Childhood Curriculum for children up to six years of age. This curriculum is being taught in Primary Schools since 2011.
There are still some places available in our Playroom and Montessori for the free ecce scheme in September. If interested please contact Marian at 056-8830119 or call to view our purpose built facility on Chapel Avenue.

RELAY FOR LIFE–TEAM BALLYRAGGET - Kilkenny’s first ever Relay for Life will take place at the Watershed (the new swimming pool) on the 20-21st July 2013. Teams of friends, neighbours, families and communities come together in groups of 13-15 people to take part in this 24 hour community celebration. Each team pledges to keep at least one member of their team walking the track for the 24 hour period and with many other activities taking place during the event there is truly a festive atmosphere. Relay for Life is a community, celebration honouring current and former cancer patients, their families and friends. It is a unique, empowering and fun event in which everyone can participate and make a real difference for people living with cancer right now and those who may be diagnosed in the future.

A survivors’ lap of Honour opens every Relay for Life worldwide celebrating those who have fought the disease. At dusk participants and community members pause to remember those who lost their battle in a very special Candle of Hope Ceremony. The Candle of Hope luminaries act as a reminder to participants of the courageous men, women and children who have battled cancer.

You don’t have to be a marathon runner to take part in this great event, anyone who walks regularly will be well able for this occasion and proudly represent Ballyragget and support those fighting cancer. If you wish to be part of “Team Ballyragget” please contact Anne on 085 7417517 and if you are a cancer survivor and wish to participate in the “Survivor’s Lap” give Anne a call and she can put you in contact with the organisers. NAOMH BRID CAMOGIE - Training continues for all players at the GAA pitch, on Tuesday evenings, from 6.15 pm to 7 .15 pm. The Under 14 team was in action against O’Loughlin Gaels, at John’s Park on Wednesday night, May 29th in the fourth round of the League. It was a beautiful evening, the pitch was perfectly prepared and the game was a thriller.

Naomh Brid opened the scoring with a Zara Gunner point from play in the first minute and after a period of dominance Kate Maher‘s goal bound shot went narrowly wide. Eve Hegarty, back from injury was on top form in attack, but scores were hard to get. An OLG goal against the run of play after 10 minutes, was countered by two Zara Gunner points from frees, but the home team added two points to lead by 1-3 to 0-3 at the break . Thanh Phelan switched to goalkeeping duties for the second half with C Wallace moving into the attack. The camogie was tremendous with the ball flying up and down the field. Our girls were really effective when striking the ball quickly .Scores were slow in coming and despite some near misses by Naomh Brid, twenty minutes had elapsed before Zara Gunner pointed from play. A minute later the OLG goalkeeper made a fantastic save from a well struck Zara Gunner shot, but Zara pointed a minute later to leave one point between the teams with eight minutes to play. A few of wides from frees and play suggested that our luck was out, but in the last minute Katie Brennan, who had covered the entire pitch throughout the game, fired over the equalising point from 30 metres out . There was one more OLG attack but our defence held firm and a well earned draw brought an absorbing contest to an end. This was a wonderful display of camogie by two well matched teams which were a credit to their clubs.  Naomh Brid had impressive displays from Katie Brophy, Katie Brennan, Zara Gunner, Kate Maher, Thanh Phelan, Eve Hegarty and Emer O’ Doherty, who was unbeatable at centre back. Team  – Chantelle Wallace, Lauren Phelan, Karen Delaney, Sheila Brophy, Sinead Walshe , Emer O’ Doherty, Katie Brophy, Katie Brennan ,Thanh Phelan, Imelda Lennon ( Capt), Zara Gunner, Mary- Kate Brennan,  Kate Maher, Zoe Gleeson, Eve Hegarty . Substitutes who played were – Kiara Walshe and Niamh Morrissey. Also on the panel – Clodagh O’ Doherty, Aoibhe Waters, Mollie Southgate, Michaela Ryan, Chieu Phelan, Roisin Waters and Sinead Morrissey. The selectors are pleased with the ongoing improvement by the players and have stressed the importance of training to ensure best performance. Thanks to O’ Loughlin Gaels for a brilliant sporting game and to Ollie O’ Neill for refereeing, in a satisfactory manner. The next Under 14 League match will be at home, against Mooncoin, on Wednesday, June 12th. Support would be appreciated for this important game. Everyone in Naomh Brid sends best wishes to Lara Dowling, Greenview, who sustained a finger injury during our recent Under 12 Blitz, at Danesfort.
