Hurling superstar JJ Delaney dropped into Youthreach Kilkenny last week to give a talk to the school’s students.

JJ spoke of the importance of goal setting, and how doing this allows someone to reach places they may have once only dreamed about. The idea of goal setting was of particular importance to the schools Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate students who will be completing their exams in the coming summer.

Based on Lower New Street in Kilkenny City, Kilkenny Youthreach provides an opportunity for early school leavers to return to education and pick up where they left off. The students then have the opportunity to avail of various FETAC Modules and the Junior Cert or Leaving Cert programmes.

JJ’s reiteration of the importance of preparation was something that struck both students and staff. He highlighted how he would plan his week so as to allow him to be completely in control, regardless of whatever the coming week may throw at him.

The Youthreach students quizzed the Cats star about his thoughts on the coming year and also about his own teens when he was preparing for his exams. It was hard to believe that just one year after his Leaving Certificate, he was already an integral part of the Kilkenny senior hurling team that has since gone onto greatness.

Focus, and a belief in oneself, was the central theme of the talk. Hopefully, this had an impact on the students.
