Kilkenny College girls win provincial final

Kilkenny College’s Junior A girls hockey team, coached by ex-Irish international Daphne Sixsmith, played against Loreto Wexford last Thursday in the provincial final at Enniscorthy Hockey Club.

There was great pressure on both sides from the starting whistle.

In the first half Kilkenny College came close to scoring after great chances from Sharon Eager and Katie Raeburn. But the half time whistle went with the score remaining 0-0.

On resuming the second half, Kilkenny College kept battling for a goal. It finally came after right-midfielder Katie Raeburn made a great run from deep up the pitch.

Shortly afterwards, Rebecca Mahon then got a short corner and hockey international Emma Duncan fired it into the goal, giving Kilkenny College a two goal lead.

With about five minutes left on the clock, Loreto got a short corner and got the ball into the goal. This made for a tense finish, but with a tough semi-final against Loreto Kilkenny behind them, the College side won out in the end. Final score: Kilkenny College 2, Loreto Wexford 1.
