Riverside MidSUMMER BBQ - Danesfort GAA Club will host a Riverside Mid-Summer BBQ weekend in Sheridan’s of Ennisnag on Bank Holiday Friday 3 and Saturday 4 August. The weekend kicks off with a Juvenile night on Friday at 9pm with music by local group The Elevator Music followed by a disco until midnight. There will be adult supervision throughout the evening with mineral bar only. Admission €12 includes BBQ and mineral. On Saturday 4 its an adults night of music and entertainment with The Gerry Walsh and Dallas Band starting at 9.00pm followed by DJ Gerry Cormican. Admission €10.
TOWNSHIP CHALLENGE - Transition Year Students take on the Niall Mellon Township Challenge: At the end of the year, Liam Mullen will travel to South Africa on what will be his 11th Township Challenge. This year, Liam will bring 4 transition year students with him, including his daughter Cliodhna. The students, who must fund their costs before travelling, have organized a 5k/10k Walk or Run “Family Day” in Woodstock Gardens, Inistiogue. This will take place on Sunday August 12 at 12pm. Entry fee €15 or family €25. Registration is at 11am. There will be face painting and bouncy castles for children to enjoy on the day. All welcome. LOTTO - Danesfort GAA & Parish Development Lotto Results Week 42 Draw took place in The Harvester Bar on July 16. Jackpot €800. Numbers Drawn: 15 - 23 – 4. There was No Winner. Five Consolation Prizes of €30 - Aiobhe Murphy, Marie Manning, John Joe Kenny, Lurline Hackett, Aine Dooley. Two Promoters Prizes of €20 - Anthony Dunne, Marie O’Brien. Proceeds were divided between the Club and Parish, €8000 & €4000 respectively. Next draw Monday July 23 in The Grange Inn, Jackpot €900. Then Delaney’s Kells Monday July 30.
CIRCUIT TRAINING - Around the country there is a good old-fashioned boom taking place with walking, running and exercising. There was a time, not so long ago, when these exercises were left to the 20s/30s+, while the older generation took on a more sedentary form of living. If you would like to be part of this new wave of exercisers, here is your chance. Margaret McCarthy, fitness instructor, is starting a “Couch to Fitness” programme in Danesfort Community Centre on Friday July 27 at 7.00pm. She will alternate between indoor circuits and track as it is the specific combination of resistance (weights) and cardio training that will result in weight loss, toning and improved body posture. FIELD DAY - The date has been set for the Annual Danesfort Parish Field Day. It will be held on Sunday September 2 with the venue being the Sevenhouse’s Coursing Grounds, as usual. Raffle tickets will be distributed this month - there are a large number of excellent prizes. Donation of vegetables, plants, baking and home produce are requested. Timber for firewood for the auction is also required. More information will be given regarding events at a later date. Can you also include that there are trade stands available in the field. GAA CLUB DEVELOPMENT - There will be a door-to-door visit by members of the Danesfort GAA Club to all homes in the parish within the next couple of weeks explaining the new developments that the Club is embarking on. At the moment the Club is in the middle of Phase 1 which involves the development of the new playing field as well as the walking track. Phase 2 hopes to see the building of a new clubhouse along with a car park and all-weather training surface. Each house will be given an information leaflet explaining the development, but please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

YOGA - Yoga, with instructor Sadhbn O’Neill, will continue on Tuesday mornings at 10.00am during the summer months on a drop-in basis. For athletes and other sports people, yoga is a godsend and can help with specifics like fallen arches, joint problems, muscle strains and flexibility. With many people now taking up running, yoga will counteract many of the problems runners commonly encounter, including shortening of the muscles and tightness in the hip area. Runners often neglect their upper body and yoga will strengthen and tone muscles in every part of the body. Remember, yoga is for everyone: young, old, female, and yes, male also. If you have never practiced yoga, and would like to try it, just drop in any Tuesday. All you need are comfortable clothing, yoga mat, blanket and small pillow. Refreshments are served after each class. Only €8.
ALZHEIMERS - A facilitated support group, for carers of people with Alzheimer’s / Dementia. Providing a safe space for information exchange, emotional and practical support and the opportunity to network with other carers in similar positions. BALLYKEEFFE - Ballykeeffe Amphitheatre will be alive over the next few weeks. The great Jack L will perform on this Saturday Night July 28. Tickets cost €20 from the Kilkenny Book Centre and Rollercoaster Records(056 7763669). The renowned Saw Doctors will take the stage on Saturday August 4. Under 16′s must be accompanied by an adult. No alcohol allowed on admission. Refreshments with a fully licensed bar will be available at venue. The Music will continue on Saturday August 18 with the appearance of Maria Doyle Kennedy, Liam O’Manlaoi and Ronan O’Snodaigh.
WALK ON THE WILD SIDE -Join local herbalist Jenny Dunne for an herb identification walk in the stunning woodlands of Ballykeeffe. Get a sense of the myriad of healing plants and their uses that grow in abundance in our native countryside. The walk will take place on Saturday August 25 between 2pm and 4pm. This is a free event.
