Afternoon in the garden - Henry and Ruby Miller extend their sincere thanks to all those who supported the “afternoon in the garden” held in their beautiful garden at Bawnmore, Johnstown. The sun shone warmly and the garden looked magnificent with such a variety of flowers, shrubs and decor. This very worthy cause the Susie Long Foundation had a wonderful support last Sunday. Money raised to date €2080. A special thanks to the neighbours and friends who became the “kitchen staff” for the day and catered so well for the crowd with teas and confectionary. A raffle was held and the winners were Margaret Garrett, Mick Sutcliffe., Mary Hutchins, Tom Cooke, Breda Campion, Frances Seale, Marie Brennan, Frank Sweetman, Noel Stanley, Carmel Delaney, Mary Brennan, Joe Fairclough, Kathleen Whelan.

500 Club draw - The annual 500 Club Draw in aid of the upkeep and refurbishment of St Kieran’s Community Hall starts on August 3rd. Tickets are on sale in Morrisseys and Sharkeys shops and cost €7.50 per month. The first draw for July and August will be held on Friday night August 3rd in the Hall. Prizes are 1st €600, 2nd€ 250,3rd to 5th €100, 6th €75. A special draw for fully paid members of €150 will be held on the same night . Tickets also on sale from members of the committee. Be in to win.

Weekly Lotto - The Jackpot in the Spa Development lotto draw is €9,800.There was one winner of match three last week. Nos drawn 18, 24, 28, 30. The winner Caroline Cahill was also promoter winner. The draw this week will be held in Ryans Bar, The Cross.

Knock Shrine- The annual pilgrimage toOur Ladys Shrine at Knock for Johnstown/ Crosspatrick parish takes place on Thursday Aug 2nd. To book contact Peggy Sharkey at 0568838507. Fare €20.

Bus Eireann - Currently there is a bus shuttle service through Johnstown to Portlaoise linking Bus Eireann in Portlaoise. It is a trial for 6 weeks and needs to be utilised fully to continue. The times are Johnstown to Portlaoise 8.40, 10.40, 12.40, 14.40, 16.40, 16.40 and 18.40. Portlaoise to Johnstown 9.20, 11.20, 13.20, 17.20, 19.20.

Monster tractor run-Johnstown which held a very successful tractor run on the 13th of May last are having a presentation night to the Carlow / Kilkenny home care team in Paschals Bar , Johnstown this Saturday night the 28th of July. Music by the” Baby powers”. No cover charge.Thanks to every one who supported us that weekend.

Cemetery Mass - The last of the cemetery Masses for this year was celebrated in Donoughmore on Tuesday evening. The annual Mass in Fenor Cemetery is on Thursday July 26th at 7.30pm.

Theological Studies - A course in Theological Studies begins in St Kieran’s College and lasts for 24 weeks September to May. The course aims at providing religious education, faith formation and spiritual enrichment for those taking part. The programme is at level 7 certificate accredited by St Patricks College, Maynooth. The classes are held on Monday and Thursday from 7pm to 9.30pm with modules in the Old and New Testament scriptures, Church History, The Church past and present, Moral Theology, Liturgy and the Sacraments. St Anne’s Camogie Club news - The first game of the 2012 Camogie Minor Championship took place in Johnstown GAA grounds on Wednesday July 11th St Anne’s v The Emeralds. This was a very sporting game watched by a large crown of loyal supporters. St Anne’s just proved too strong in all areas of the field for the Emeralds team and played to their full potential. St Anne’s had good performance all over the field. Maria Cullinane was brilliant in goal and pulled off some great saves. All six defenders played well and were very dependable in defence, Niamh Sweeney and Niamh Cullinane showed us some great blocks and mighty clearances out of defence and kept the pressure on the Emeralds. Mary Corcoran and her mid field player Chloe Purcell were in excellent form on the night, both dominated mid field and gave constant supply of balls to the forwards, Siobhan Corcoran gave an exhibition at wing forward and scored 5-8 Sarah Whelan scored 1-2 Chloe Purcell scored 0-2 and Mary Corcoran scored 0-2. Best for the Emeralds were Ciara Phelan 0-3 Brid Moore 0-1 and Jessie Ryan 0-1. Congrats to all the girls and this team is trained by Alannah Purcell, Sarah Dermody and Kieran Brophy.

U 16 Camogie Championship - St Anne’s U16 camogie team played a combined St Lactains/Conahy team on Friday July 13th in Johnstown GAA grounds. It was a nice bright evening and a great evening for a camogie match.The girls played well and gave a good account of themselves, St Anne’s never gave up and they fought to the bitter end and showed the type of spirit that is alive and well in the camogie club. Final score St Anne’s 0-10 St Lactains/Conahy 2-5. Best for St Anne’s were Niamh Sweeney, Chloe Purcell, Mary Corcoran and Ellen Fitzpatrick. Best for St Lactains/Conahy were Clodagh Power and Sarah Lannigan. Scores for St. Anne’s - Laura Whelan 0-1, Sarah Whelan 0-1 Chloe Purcall 0-3 and Mary Corcoran 0-5. St Anne’s Camogie Club hosted the U10 Camogie Blitz on Saturday last in Johnstown GAA grounds. Three great games were served up with plenty of skill and commitment shown by all teams that took part in the blitz. Teams from Clara and The Fenians U10 boys played St Anne’s. Many thanks to all the parents who helped in any way on the day. This was greatly appreciated. A special thanks to Ann Ryan, Hilda Mackey, Caroline Phelan, Kathleen Webster, Geraldine Beehan, Milo Quinlan, Cha Duggan and Johnny Mc Carthy who had the venue in great shape for the occasion and catered for everyone who attended the blitz. Training continues for all girls playing on the Intermediate, Minor and U16 teams. Text messages will be sent out by Chloe Purcell during each week to all members involved.
