A new book on Kilkenny’s tombstones and monuments is to be launched in Callan this Friday evening, prior to the opening of the Abhainn Ri Festival.

‘Kilkenny Gravestone and Monument Illustrations’ is a new book edited by Michael O’ Dwyer. It will be launched by Joseph Kennedy at the Continuity in Stone Conference – a three-day event, which is part of the festival.

The new book is notable for a large variety of sketches (by the late Rita Harte) of an array of tombstones and monuments from around the county. It contains a wealth of information on a number of prominent local families involved in the tombs and monuments business, namely the O’ Tunneys, the Kerins and the O’ Sheas of Callan.

The book launch is to take place at 8.30pm on Friday evening and the Friary on Mill Street in Callan. The book will have a special launch price on the night of €10.
