Freshford: James Farrell (8) wins the Captain’s prize

LATE MRS MARY KENNEDY - The death occurred last week of Mrs. Mary Kennedy late of Ballyphilip, Freshford. The deceased who was aged 80 had been unwell recently but nevertheless her passing caused widespread shock and regret. She was formerly from Parksgrove Ballyragget. She was widely known and respected in the village and surrounding areas. Her remains were removed from Kennedys Funeral home on Thursday evening to St.Lachtains Church Freshford and Burial took place on Friday in St. Lachtains Cemetery following Requiem Mass. There was a guard of honor at the removal from members of the local camogie club and the local coursing club. She is mourned by her husband Sean, son Sean, daughters, Mary, Eileen, Delia, Alice, Claire, Esther and Imelda, grandchildren, brother, sons in law, brother in law and extended family to whom deepest sympathy is extended

GOLF - Freshford Golf Society held their Captains Prize in Faithlegg, County Waterford recently It was a great day with over 30 golfers turning up for the group’s last outing of the year. Shane McGree, Captain awarded his first prize to James Farrell – 40points (8) Second prize went to Jonathan Doheny -38pts (21) Third was Shane himself on 36 pts (13) Fourth – JJ Tobin – 36pts (16) Fifth- Liam Hickey – 35pts (22) and Sixth Mick McKillen – 34pts (13). Front Nine went to Nigel Crosby - Back Nine –Graeme O’Flaherty. Player of the Year went to JJ Tobin who received a Memorial Cup which was put up this year in memory of the late Martin McGree who passed away earlier this year. The Society wish to thank everyone for a very successful year and especially their Sponsors Kavanaghs Bar and Farells Bar and welcome their incoming Captain for next year – Graeme O’Flaherty

TOTS TO TEENS - Tots to teens Group held their AGM recently in the Community Hall, Freshford with a good attendance on the night. Mary Crosby was re-elected as Chairperson. Secretary is Janet Bergin and Karen Brophy Treasurer. PRO is Caroline Bowden. Rehearsals will take place in the Community Hall every Monday evening form 4 – 6pm . YOUTHS SOCCER - Youths play Lions of Durrow on Saturday at Woodview at 4pm and the Under 15s take on Clover Utd at home also on Saturday with kick off at 5pm

VOLUNTEERS - Kilkenny Carlow Contract is a Community based voluntary organization for older people covering Kilkenny and Carlow area and are presently looking for additional volunteers to commit to one or to hours per week to befriend/visit older people who are living alone in the area. The Group are having a stand at the Information Day for Older People being held at the Mill Family Resource Centre on this Thursday 20th September. FRESHFORD COMMUNITY MARKET - Freshford Community Market is held each Saturday from 11 – 1pm The number of stalls and a good variation of goods on offer are increasing also This is a community initiative and you are urged to go along and support your local Community and maybe have a tea or coffee and some homemade scones or cakes all locally produced.  GAA - St.Lachtains Minor hurlers bowed out of the championship on Saturday last when they were beaten by Dicksboro in the semi final played at Kilmanagh.The city side proved too strong on the day and despite being behind by 10 points atone stage in the game they were beaten by 4pts at the final whistle. The final will see two city teams Dicksboro and James Stephens come face to face.  Intermediate team - Training continues for our Intermediate team in preparation for their final league game V Conahy Shamrocks  which is set to take place next weekend (see fixtures for time and date) . A large number of Supporters travelled from Freshford to the All Ireland Hurling final on Sunday last to support their County. SOCCER - Freshford Town had only one team action at the weekend. The U14 boys were at home to Deen Celtic and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Freshfords goal came from Cathal O’Leary but the visiting side got the equalizer from the penalty spot and the game finished level. The Junior side are back in action next weekend . They played their first match in Division 2 recently against neighbours Brookville of Ballyragget. The game ended in a 4-4 draw. Training has resumed for 5-9 year old continues each Saturday from 12 - 1 with Gary Barnaville in charge. All young boys in that age group are most welcome. The club has entered an U13 girls team for this season and any girls in that age group wishing to sign can contact any member of the Club. The KDL Lotto is still ongoing with Jackpot now standing at €8,700 There was no winner of the Jackpot and no match three winner .Anyone wishing to help to sell tickets can contact Club Secretary Moira McCarthy on 0871468168.. DANCE CLASSES - Social dance classes will resume in St.Kierans Hall Johnstown on this Wednesday at 8pm. If you would like to dance the Old time waltz, quick step, fox trot, jive etc.., you can go along on Wednesday nights. You don’t need a partner just go along and bring your friends. MARATHON - Four local lads are taking part in the Dublin City Marathon at the moment – Andrew Martin, Paul Phelan, Noel Maher and Paul Dowling. . Relay For Life is coming to Kilkenny - What is Relay For Life? At Relay For Life hundreds of people gather to embark on a veryspecial 24-hour journey.Relay For Life is an overnight , community celebration and a unique , empowering and fun event. At the heart of Relay is the opportunity to CELEBRATE Cancer Survivors and to REMEMBER those who have left us. We are currently asking people who may have been touched in any way by cancer to come and join in the CELEBRATION . Our Relay For Life will be held on Saturday and Sunday the 20th and 21st of July , 2013 at Scanlon Park , Kilkenny. We are recruiting teams of volunteers who will walk around the track in relay , for 24 hours , because cancer never sleeps!!. Otherwise team members are free to socialise , have fun and enjoy the fun packed day and entertainment. ACTIVE RETIREMENT GROUP - Freshford Active Retirement Group meet in the local Community Hall each Tuesday at 3pm. New members are always most welcome.
