Kilkenny Music Festival a huge success

THE 14th Kilkenny Music Festival took place over five days and three different venues in Kilkenny last week. THE 14th Kilkenny Music Festival took place over five days and three different venues in Kilkenny last week. Beginning on March 7 and running until the 11th, over seventy cups and trophies were awarded for choral, vocal solo and instrumental performances by competitors from Kilkenny, Carlow, Laois, Waterford and Wexford.

The festival committee and a dedicated team of volunteers were joined by the hard working Fesitval accompanists: Muireann Carroll and Cathy Kenny, and by the Festival’s adjudicators: Michael Lynch (Brass and Woodwind competitions), Robert Mahon (String and Chamber music competitions), John O’Brien (Choral and Vocal competitions) and Andrew Synott (Piano competitions). Many thanks are also due to the CBS secondary school, St. Canice’s N.S. and Kilkenny College, who acted as competition venues for the duration of the Festival, and without whose warm welcome and support the festival would have been impossible.

During the performances by the thousands of school children, students and adults participating this year the adjudicators have nominated several competitors to take place in the final Gala concert. Unfortunately not all prize winners could be chosen but those who are could be awarded some of the Festival’s most prestigious prizes: the Rev. C.J. Sherin Perpetual Trophy for the most outstanding Choir in the festival with the Kilkenny Music Festival/Statestreet Bursary, the Rev. C.J. Sherin Perpetual Trophy for the most Outstanding Individual in the festival with the Meubles Bursary, the Millennium Cup for the adjudicator’s choice of most entertaining performance, the Canon Brennan Memorial cup for emerging talent with a Kilkenny Music Festival Bursary and the Kilkenny Music Festival Bursary award presented by the Kilkenny Music Festival Committee to enable further musical study. The Gala Concert will take place on the 21st of March in the Set Theatre at Langton’s on John Street at 7.30pm (tickets available on the door). For any queries about the Gala Concert or the Festival itself please email or ring (086)3569745. Kilkenny Music Festival would like to thank all its sponsors including St. Canice’s Credit Union, Meubles, Statestreet and Kilkenny Borough Council. Without their support the Festival could not continue.
