Danesfort: Meeting to address dangerous levels of road traffic

MEETING ON TRAFFIC GOING TO MOTORWAY - A Public Meeting will be held in Danesfort Community Centre on Monday October 15 at 8.00pm to discuss the increase in the volume of HGVs and general traffic on Local Roads in the parish leading on to the M9 Motorway. The volume of heavy vehicles and motor traffic “Passing Through” has now reached dangerous proportions and needs to be addressed immediately. Whether you are directly or indirectly affected, your attendance at this meeting is very important to highlight your concerns and also to have this issue brought to meeting at County Council level. Please give your support by attending and also telling your neighbours about this meeting.

ALL STARS - Congratulations to Paul Murphy and Richie Hogan who have been nominated for the 2012 GAA GPA All-Star Hurling Awards. Paul is nominated in the full back line while Richie is nominated in the full forward line. Paul also gets the Player of the Year nomination alongside Henry Shefflin and Galway’s Joe Canning. The final team of 15 players will be announced live on RTÉ television on Friday October 26 at the GAA/GPA All-Stars Awards ceremony sponsored by Opel.

GAA - Danesfort finally got two points when they overcame Dunnamaggin in Hugginstown 1-15 to 1-12 in the St.Canice’s Credit Union Senior Hurling League Group 1 Round 5, last Saturday. This means Danesfort take on Graigue Ballycallan,and Dicksboro play Dunnamaggin in he first round of the senior championship. These two games also double as relegation semi-finals. These games are due to be played this weekend.

J.J. REDDY MEMORIAL RUN - Sunday was a great day in Danesfort with the second 10k and 5k Fun Run. The JJ Reddy Danesfort 10k (&5k Fun Run)  enjoyed the best weather of the week and over 300 people turning out to run or walk in the 2 runs, which went around the Danesfort - Burnchurch Areas. There was great atmosphere back at the Danesfort GAA clubhouse after the race with cakes and buns teas and coffees sandwiches, oranges and bananas supplied by the organisers for everyone, and  hot dogs and burgers for the hungrier. The Liam McCarthy Cup was there with the Danesfort Senior County Hurlers, Richie Hogan, Paddy Hogan and Paul Murphy who were there to help on the day along with many of the club hurlers and camogie players. There were numerous spot prizes and a raffle with great prizes. Many people bought the souvenir running shirts.The organisers would like to thank the numerous sponsors,  all the helpers on the day, the stewards, catering staff and all the people helping in and around the clubhouse. The event was a great success and plans for next year are already in train. There will be a full report with winners and photos in next week’s notes.

KARATE - Danesfort Karate Club meet in the Danesfort Community Centre every Tuesday from 4pm - 5pm.The ‘After-School’ Kids Only Karate Class is for boys and girls aged between 4 years and 12 years old. Karate has many proven benefits for kids both physical and mentally. YOGA - Yoga classes take place every Tuesday in Danesfort Community Centre 10.00am. Yoga will increase your flexibility and improve muscle tone, breathing and body posture. One can start yoga at any age. If you would like to try it, just drop in to our classes. All you need are comfortable clothing, yoga mat, blanket and small pillow. BRIDGE - Bridge Classes are held every Tuesday in Danesfort Community Centre at 8.00pm with Annette Kennedy,Member of C.B.A.I. Bridge Teachers Association. A knowledge of cards is not necessary. CIRCUIT TRAINING - Circuit Training is held every Friday at 7pm in Danesfort Community Centre. The circuit is a fantastic way to tone, lose weight and get fit. Each station is adapted to suit your individual fitness level and is suitable for different age groups also. You can work at your own pace with a mixture of weight training and cardiovascular work. QUIZ -A table quiz will be held in Sheridans Lounge Ennisnag on Friday October 19 at 8pm.St Michaels NS Parents Association are hosting this fundraising event to aid the building of a new classroom and your support is greatly appreciated. Tables of 4 cost €20.

COMPUTERS - Computer Classes are starting this Wednesday in Danesfort Community Centre. If you are interested in learning computer skills or you want to brush up on your skills, please contact 086 1666547. Booking in advance of classes is essential. It would be advisable also to have access to your own laptop or computer for practice.

PLOUGHING -Congratulations to Danesfort’s Ireland brothers in their recent success in the national Ploughing Championships, in New Ross. Brian Ireland won the All Ireland, intermediate reversible ploughing class while his brother Garry took second position. Brian and Garry are sons of fine Gael Councillor Billy Ireland and Mary Ireland.

STONEMASON - A Stonemason course will begin in Droichead Family Resource Centre, The Friary, Callan on Wednesday, Oct 10th and will run for 10 Wednesdays. It will take place in the Abbey Meadow from 9am – 4.30pm. The cost of the course is €20 and is run in partnership with Kilkenny VEC and Droichead FRC.

TIME OUT - Time out for Women is a social and educational project for Women in Callan and its hinterland that provides a taster programme on a wide range of informational and practical topics. Applicants must participate in all modules which include: Calligraphy, Woodwork for Beginners, Financial Advice Workshop(MABS), Christmas Flower arranging, Stress Management (relaxation), Job Search work shop (VEC), Dietician Workshop (Health Promotion Unit), Pilates, Fitness for women & computers. This programme will be run 2 days per week over 10 weeks. It will run every Wednesday and Thursday (school term) from 9.30am - 12.30pm. The course will begin early October. S.O.S. - S.O.S. is a Voluntary Organisation in Kilkenny for adults with a mild-moderate intellectual disability, providing day services, respite and residential care. They are looking for families or individuals (hosts) to provide short breaks (day/overnight/weekend) in their home for adults from our services. Each host is matched with one person from S.O.S. and an expense allowance is paid for each break provided. They are also looking for volunteers to support us in providing extra social and recreational activities for people attending S.O.S. in the evening time or weekends.
