Horse racing - - Young amateur jockey, David Mullins will long remember Wednesday February 20 at Punchestown.
The 16 year old from Doninga, son of Tom and Helen Mullins rode his first winner in the Goffs Punchestown Invitational Sale Flat Race. It was a total local affair as the horse Rathvawn Belle is owned by Gowran man, Jimmy Barcoe and was trained by Dick Donohoe. The horse was returned at 33/1 but paid 155/1 on the tote. David also togs out for local hurling club Barrow Rangers.
SPLIT THE PoT RESULTS - This week Sharon McLoughlin from Barrow Meadows won €88, Pauline Carroll, The Coffee Dock won €20 and Bernie Mahon, Barrowmount Drive won €20. BROTHERS CONTINUE THEIR SUCCESS - This coming Friday evening young Paulstown boxer, Keith Flavin will be in line for the overall winner of the Kilkenny People/Hotel Kilkenny Sports Star of the Year award for 2012; Keith was the monthly winner for November. On March 10 he will be heading to Russia for two weeks where he will box for Ireland in a Youth Tournament. Hot on his heels is his younger brother Shane who is also striving for success this weekend as he has reached the Leinster Final of the Boys 4, 39 kg by beating Tadgh Joyce of Athy in the semi-final. He will box John Stokes in the final next Sunday in Athy. The very best of luck is wished to both lads.
CAGE FIGHTER - Congratulations to Mick Brennan, Ballyellen who had a great win on Saturday night at the Cage Contender 16 Contest in Dublin. Mick is with the Boxing Academy, Kilkenny and produced a solid stand up winning performance to beat off a very tough opponent.
BARROW RANGERS REGISTRATION NIGHT - Barrow Rangers registration night takes place this Friday night March 1 at 7.30 in the Church Hall, Paulstown. All juvenile players (under 14 to minor €30) and junior players are asked to attend, €80 for junior players. Membership for non players is €40.

FUNDRAISING CONCERT - St Lazerian’s House, Bagenalstown are holding a fundraising concert on Friday 8th of March 2013. The concert will be held in St Andrew’s Church, Bagenalstown.
This will be our 5th year for our concerts and we always like to have a variety of different themes and different performers. Following feedback from people who attend the concerts, we have decided that the theme for this year is “Songs from the Musicals”. I am looking for performers who would like to join us on the evening and sing two songs from their favourite musical.

SOCCER RESULTS - Bridge United under 17’s drew 1-1 with Ormondeville under lights in Scanlon Park on Thursday night. The under 15’s lost 5-3 to Evergreen in Goresbridge, it was end to end stuff. The under 13’s travelled to Callan and came home with a 2-2 draw. The under 11’s came up against a strong Thomastown team and lost 4-0. Bridge Utd U9s picked up their tenth win from ten games with a comprehensive 9-1 win against Lions of Durrow. Goals from Kyle Foley (4), Joe Healy, Cathal Purcell (2 each) and Aaron Hosey.
A great achievement by any standards. Keep up the hard work lads; it pays off on match days!
Bridge United A team beat Freebooters B 3-1 in Kilkenny to move to 13 points and a step closer to safety.
WON DIVISION 2 - Last week the under 12’s won division 2. It was reported they needed to win their last game but results elsewhere went their way so they are champions. This team was managed by Damien Barcoe and Conor English who built on the foundations laid
down by Kevin O’ Neill, it is great to see young managers doing well. It is only a few seasons ago that they were in short trousers, both are sons of club legends who played back in the day when the men were steel and ships were wooden and not the other way around.
LIBRARY OPEN - The library at Goresbridge Rural Development, Barrack St is open Mon – Fri, 9.30 to 1. There is a great selection of books to choose from, something to suit everyone. It is very simple there is no charge, you can bring books and take books in exchange, and even if you don’t have a book to bring you can certainly take some to read.
COMMUNITY GARDEN - If you are interested in learning to grow vegetables and herbs feel free to go along to the community garden behind the offices of GRD on Wednesday mornings. Dee Sewell from Greenside Up is the expert on hand to give advice. It starts at 10 and finishes at 12. It is very sociable, with a cup of tea/coffee and biscuits on hand also.
