Aerial displays - The family home of Rochford’s in Clogga, Mooncoin is set on a hillside overlooking Mooncoin and the Suir Valley. During a clear day one can see several counties and for many miles.

However, when evening comes and around 18:00, the scene is very much different. We were invited there last week to witness the daily arrival of 10’s of thousand’s of starling;’ maybe more have returned to Ireland for the Winter, and putting one of Ireland’s most spectacular aerial displays. Around 12 groups of several thousand birds at a time come from the South East direction and settle in a cluster of trees on the right side of the Rochford family home. You can hear the sound of the wings as they start to arrive, they follow a leader in the group and create patterns in the sky as they dive and swoop in unison, and you can hear them rustle the trees as they settle down in the trees. Then after about a minute they all rise into the sky again and move to the left side of the house in a cluster of evergreen trees. Again one can head the sound of thousands of wings as the birds settle down in the trees, almost simultaneously they all go quiet, as the next flock start to arrive at the right side of the home and they settle down in this manner. It is an amazing display of nature to witness such large flock’s of birds arrive and darken the sky.
