Blistering start to new stake that offers big pot

THE second sponsored stake with a big pot got underway on Friday night at Kilkenny greyhound track.

This time around it was the Track Bookmakers a3 525 yard stake which carries a pool of €7,000. The fastest time of the first round came in the first heat as Gypsy Biker sizzled for Matthew O'Gorman in 29.21.

The winner was well away and led Circumnavigation around the first turn. Gypsy Biker opened a big lead into the back stretch and looked in complete control.

The hotpot All Dolled Up ran on into second spot late on, but Gypsy Biker was home by five and a half lengths in 29.21.

The Paul Hennessy trained Stranger In Camp took the second heat by a length and a half in 29.30. The winner went up well but was led into the turn by Longrock Sheelin.

Stranger In Camp edged into the lead down the far side before easing away for the victory.

Paul Hennessy doubled up with Uxorious in the following heat. The 9/4 chance was up in the van early doors and by the second bend was three lengths clear of his rivals.

Uxorious was still three lengths clear by the three but late on came under pressure from Springwell Vicky. Vicky came home strong but Uxorious held on by a short in 29.38.

Boherduff Rose continued her love affair with the track as she ran out a two and a half length winner over Cool Rocket in heat 4. The recent a7 stake winner was back in third place for much of the early running as Ballydaniel Og set the pace.

When Ballydaniel Og failed to maintain the pace out of the third bend, Boherduff Rose was on hand to pounce and claim her fourth success at the track this year.

Looked in charge

In the fifth heat, the early pace came from Dryland James and he led around the first two turns. Dryland James turned into the third bend still five lengths clear and looked in charge.

However he faded on the long run home and was nabbed in the shadow of the post by the running on Buddys Express. Buddys Express, trained by Sean Leahy, took the race by a head, in 29.44.

The sixth heat saw Teds Porshe out in front, with Cashmans Cat in hot pursuit. The challenger closed a two length deficit on the leader into the third bend.

The pair bumped and that offered a chance to the in-form Knockdrinna Pact. 'Pact swept by the pair and galloped on for a two length success in 29.45.

It was three up for Paul Hennessy in the seventh heat as Tipforthetop beat Episode One by three and a half lengths in 29.51. The winner looked short of room on the run up but managed to get through and had soon caught up with Episode One.

From there Tipforthetop eased to record a comfortable win.

Thomas Gould's Good Prince came out on top in a very enjoyable tussle with Lemon Swanky. The winner went in front on the rails around the first bends but Lemon Swanky wouldn't go away. Swanky came with one final surge up the home straight but Good Prince held on by a short head in 29.38.

Dan off to the Derby

The Thomas Leahy trained Welesbourne Dan booked his place in the first round of the Derby after victory in what turned out to be a messy Derby Trial Stake. There was trouble at the first bend and more at the second bend which saw Welesbourne Dan shunted back to last place as Dysert O Shea led the field.

Coming to the last Welesbourne Dan had got back into contention but Raheen Phantom looked to be the one likely to pick off Dysert O Shea. Raheen Phantom did get by only for Welesbourne Dan to shot by on his inner crossing the line.

The winning distance was a neck in 30.80.

The fastest time of the night came in the a5 race as Pennys Viking ran his rivals ragged. The joint favourite took up the running out of the first bend and showed his class. The hotpot stormed away to win by eight lengths in a sensational 29.07.

Goodtime Charlie was the trap to line winner of the a6/a7 race. The winner cut off Astro Touch at the first bend and never looked back.

Impact Girl tried to make a race of it late on but was always playing second fiddle to Goodtime Charlie by two lengths in 29.50.
