Brown pulls off late, late rescue for Cork

Camogie

Kilkenny 3-6

Cork 3-6

THE Kilkenny intermediate camogie team are progressing nicely through the group stages of Division 2 of the National League. On Saturday in Mullinavat they were unluckily not to beat Cork, who earned a draw via a last gasp point from a 45 by sharp-shooter Michelle Browne.

Showing the benefits of playing together as a team, Kilkenny are starting to gel much more effectively as a unit.Making four changes in personnel following the heavy defeat to Tiperary, plus numerous positional changes, Kilkenny looked better balanced and their form improved.

Cork made a magnificent start when Browne bagged a goal in the fourth minute. She added a pointed free within minutes. However, Kilkenny began to settle. They struck double gold in the 11th and 13th minutes.

Slice of fortune

Aine Fahy, operating at wing-forward, soloed through the Cork defence before hand-passing the sliothar into the net. Then they enjoyed a slice of fortune within two minutes. Tara Warren appeared to be attempting score a point. She mis-hit the ball. It broke loose to youngster Mags Fennelly, who struck an excellent shot to the net (2-0 to 1-1).

Suddenly Kilkenny were motoring. Warren pointed a free seconds later before this action packed clash saw Cork regain parity in the 17th minute. Denise Luby took advantage of a poor clearance from the Kilkenny defence when striking home from close range (2-1 each).

Emma Carroll pointed to regain the lead for Kilkenny. Then there wasn’t a score registered until the 26th minute.

Luby pointed the levelling free before goalscorers Fennelly and Fahy pointed (2-4 to 2-2).

However, Cork had the last say in the half. Michelle Browne goaled to regain the lead for the visitors (3-2 to 2-4).

Defences tightened up greatly after the change, and forwards couldn't find space. Browne and Warren exchanged pointed frees before Mags Fennelly bagged her second goal in the 41st minute to edge Kilkenny 3-5 to 3-3 ahead.

Alin O’Donovan and Tara Warren exchanged points, and with Kilkenny maintaining their two point advantage in the closing minutes victory was within their grasp. However, Michelle Browne pointed from play in the 57th minute and in the third minute of injury-time Cork were awarded a 45.

Browne, who starred in the 2008 All-Ireland intermediate final defeat to Kilkenny, stepped up and safely delivered the ball between the posts to deprive the home side of victory.

Kilkenny were disappointment at losing the extra point so late on, but the girls are making progress and that is more important in the long run. Next up is a clash against Derry on Sunday at a half-way venue.
