Busy CBS delight as they march into semi-finals.

Good Counsel 0-7
DELIGHTED was the way Kilkenny CBS team officials summed up this busy and comfortable win over Good Counsel (New Ross) in the Leinster colleges senior hurling championship at wet and bitterly cold Thomastown on Saturday, writes John Knox.
The CBS, all action, all concentration and totally committed from the start, caught hold of the game from the throw-in and they dominated opponents who had a good sprinkling of Kilkenny players involved before booking a semi-final place against St Peter’s College (Wexford) on Saturday week.
“We were delighted with that performance,” insisted Kilkenny panelist and CBS team official, Matt Ruth. “The work-rate was top class. The discipline was excellent. There was not much more we could have asked of the players.”
Good Counsel, to their credit, showed good improvement on their league form but they just couldn’t hold back the CBS tide, even if sterling centre-back, Ciaran Ryan - he’s from the Rower-Inistioge club - was in sublime form.
Force of hurling
The winners opened back by the breeze, but it was the force of their hurling more than any influence by the elements that saw them take control from the off. They had 1-4 on the ’board without reply after 20 minutes as they punished the losers for committing some silly fouls - the free count ran 10-5 in that half.
Deadly finisher Ciaran Doyle hit the target three times during the opening nine minutes. The only real threat from the opposition during that time was a determined burst up the field by Ryan, but he put his effort wide.
On the quarter house the CBS bagged a goal. Doyle drove in a ball from the right wing at the town end, and when the ball was allowed run loose at the back post Philip Campion raced in and scrambled it to the net.
With the addition of another point from a free by Doyle, following a chop down on the hurley of Jack Langton, the losers found themselves 1-4 to no score behind.
Mark Mansfield got the losers off the scoring mark with a pointed free in the 25th minute. That was answered quickly by Jack Langton before Mansfield posted a reply, again via a free. An exchange of points followed before the CBS retired for the break leading by 1-6 to 0-3.
The winners consolidated their position during the five minutes immediately after the restart when they posted three scores per Doyle, one from a free (1-9 to 0-3). Even at this early stage things were looking bleak for Good Counsel, because they were being hounded all over the field and the hooking and blocking by the CBS was top notch.
Never came under pressure
The next two three scores fell to the losers, but they were never allowed get close enough to mount backbreaking pressure on the opposition. The CBS, with Ciaran Doyle, Robbie Fitzpatrick and Shane Cassin hurling like demons, and Eoin McGrath, Mason Clifford and Jack Langton also going well, maintained a tight grip on things throughout.
Along with Ryan, who is a neat, neat hurler, the losers had star performers in Michael Redmond, Ruairi Tubrid and agile goalie, John Walsh, who hails from Mullinavat.
