Cats conquer

IN RELATIVE terms Kilkenny may be a small county with a far from huge population, but our gutsy young sports people constantly punch way about their weight. They did so again during the past week or so.

Top of the hit parade was stylish boxer Darren O'Neill, Paulstown, who retained the 75kgs title at the national senior championship in the National Stadium on Friday night.

Within 24 hours, the talented girls from the Loreto Secondary School in the City took hold of the All-Ireland colleges senior camogie championship title for the first time. However, this was the third season in-a-row that the crown was brought to Kilkenny.

A few days earlier the Leinster colleges senior hurling championship final was turned into an all-Kilkenny affair with St Kieran's College and Kilkenny CBS doing battle for the honours. The College claimed their 46th title after a titantic struggle.

"Winning the second title was just as sweet as winning the first one," beamed a thrilled O'Neill, who is also a European Union champion.

"It took us all our time to beat the CBS. The saga may not be over. We could have to try and do it again in the All-Ireland series, you never know," suggested St Kieran's official, Tom Hogan, when paying tribute to the quality of both teams after a top class decider.

"We won, but we didn't play as well as we can," was more or less the summary from the Loreto after they downed Blackwater Community School (Lismore) in the camogie final.

It was another week of high achievement for Kilkenny on the sports scene!
