'Ducksie' and Maher are the Masters

Handball

ON SUNDAY in Leixlip, Michael ‘Ducksie’ Walsh and Pat Maher won the Masters A doubles handball title when they overcame Antrim’s Paddy Crothers and John McGarry. After a marathon two and a half hour game the Kilkenny pair finally took the spoils.

They were slow to get going in the first game and lost 21-9. They upped their performance in the second and won 21-11. The experience of the local partnership proved to be the difference in the decisive set and the Talbots Inch/Clogh partnership won 21-17.

There was no joy for Kilkenny intermediate players, Eddie Burke and Brian Minogue. They lost out in two straight games to Limerick’s Seamus O’Carroll and C.J. Fitzpatrick, 21-13, 21-13 while Marie Therese O’Neill could not get her hands on the ladies junior singles crown as she lost out 21-20, 21-11 to Lisa Loughnane, Clare.

The Talbot’s Inch partnership of Paddy O’Reilly and Seamus Reade failed to retain their title in the Diamond Masters doubles final in Windgap. They lost to Pakie Mullins and Jim Ryan, Tipperary 21-11, 21-10. The city players never got going and found aces hard to come by. Like all the other players they can look forward to the 60x30 championships.

This weekend sees many Kilkenny players involved in the Irish Nationals which will be played in Ulster venues from Friday until Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Tommy O’Brien tournament will be held from May 4 to 9. Everyone is looking forward to a great weekend of action.
