Kilkenny pair on Fitzgibbon Team of Century

TWO Kilkenny hurlers have been named on the Fitzgibbon Cup Team of the Century.

Ted Carroll was named as centre-back on the star selection. A winner of two Fitzgibbon Cup medals with UCD in 1959 and 1960, Ted Carroll was one of the first Kilkenny players to achieve national honours at university and inter-county level. He went on to three All-Ireland medals, and was named hurler of the year in 1969. He and his brother Mick were the first set of twins to play together on a Fitzgibbon Cup-winning side, with UCD in 1960.

Kilkenny’s second award winner is Henry Shefflin, who was a Fitzgibbon Cup medallist with Waterford IT in 1999 and 2000. He was also the top scorer in two finals, and was twice a runner-up in the competition. Shefflin now has eight All-Ireland senior hurling medals and ten All-Stars.

The team was selected by the GAA’s Higher Education committee, drawing from a shortlist of 75 players over 100 years of the competition.

Team of the Century: Tommy Daly (UCD & Clare/Dublin), Seamus Hickey (UL & Limerick), Niall McInerney (UCG & Clare/Galway), John Grainger (UCC & Cork), Seán Silke (Maynooth & Galway), Ted Carroll (UCD & Kilkenny), Eamonn Corcoran (WIT & Tipperary), Paul O’Connor (UCC & Cork), Jim Hurley (UCC & Cork), Henry Downey (QUB & Derry), John O’Halloran (UCC & Cork), Pat Henchy (UCC/UCD & Clare), Nicky English (UCC & Tipperary), Joe Canning (LIT & Galway), Henry Shefflin (WIT & Kilkenny).
