Now the GAA coach the coaches
OVER 150 Leinster GAA Tutors received their graduation papers in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise as part of a joined training initiative with the National University Ireland Galway (NUIG) Adult Education division and Coaching Ireland.
Tutors have now successfully completed both the Foundation Diploma in Training and Education with NUIG and have been assimilated as GAA tutor with Coaching Ireland.
Coach Education Programmes attract huge interest from all counties and the demand for courses has increased significantly. This reflects the desire from the volunteers to improve coaching expertise and gain formal qualifications.
Dr Seamus MacMathuna, secretary for Academic Affairs NUI Galway, highlighted the central role that education and training plays in the development of individuals and communities and the importance of professional skills development in the workplace, in sport and in society generally.
“Through our training partnership with the Leinster Council of the GAA, NUI Galway has been very pleased to cooperate in delivering this professional Foundation Diploma which equips all of you with the coaching and leadership skills essential for your future role as tutors, trainers and coaches within the GAA,” he said.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony Michael McGeehin of Coaching Ireland said that coaches have a vital role to play in the development of players.
“A well motivated and knowledgeable coach can improve performance at all levels and the education of the coach plays an essential role in determining the quality of coaches,” he added.
Tutors will work at ‘coaching the coaches’ all around the province of Leinster said Seamus Howlin, provincial chairman, said they would have “a huge impact on Gaelic games in every county”.
