Teachers are chasing a hurling All-Ireland on the home front

KILKENNY hurling teams will be chasing All-Ireland titles on two fronts on Saturday. St Patrick’s (Ballyragget) will be in Croke Park where they will take on Charlevilla (Cork) in the national junior club decider, while in Larchfield (2pm) the Kilkenny Second Level Teachers team will tackle champions, Medtronic (Galway) in the All-Ireland inter-firms senior final.

Medtronic defeated Dunreidy/Lyng Motors in last year’s final, and recently they beat the Cork Gardai in the All-Ireland semi-final.

Their team includes a number of present and former Galway senior hurlers, including Iarlath Tannion, Andrew Smith, Shane Kavanagh, Conor Kavanagh, Keril Wade and Niall Healy

The Kilkenny Teachers provided a good few players for the county on Sunday for the Walsh Cup clash with Westmeath, and all did very well.

Schools involved include Callan CBS, Castlecomer CS, Kilkenny CBS, St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny Vocational School and Abbey Community School.

The idea to form a team and enter the competition came from the players, many of whom are close friends. They have already beaten last year’s finalists, Dunreidy/Lyng Motors in the Kilkenny final and the Prison Officers in the Leinster final, and with the good form showin in the Walsh Cup, hopes are reasonably high. Recent preparations included a challenge game against a Kilkenny under-21 selection, plus the Walsh Cup action. The Teachers are ready to let rip, and who knows, by 7pm on Saturday the county could be richer by two All-Ireland titles.

Teachers panel includes Tom Ryan (Graigue-Ballycallan), Liam Hennebry (Mooncoin), Canice Hickey (Dunnammaggin), Shane Prendergast (Clara), Peter Donovan (Erin’s Own), Seamus O’Dwyer (Ballinakill), Ger Flood (James Stephens), Eamon Walsh (Ballyhale Shamrocks), Joe Holden (Ballyhale Shamrocks), Martin Walsh (Tullaroan), Lester Ryan (Clara), Conor Fogarty (Erin’s Own), Paul O’Flynn (Dicksboro), Michael Rice (Carrickshock), Richie Ruth (Thurles Sarsfields), Alan Healy (Conahy Shamrocks), Keith Hogan (Clara), Nicky Kenny (Piltown), Mark Aylward (Ballyhale Shamrocks), David McCormack (James Stephens), Mattew Ruth (James Stephens), John Keane (De La Salle), Eoin McCormack (James Stephens), Brian Kennedy (St Lachtain’s), Jason Corcoran (John Lockes).
