The CBS strom into Leinster final
Kilkenny CBS1-12 South Dublin Colleges1-8
KILKENNY CBS stormed into the Leinster juvenile hurling final (Dr Barry Cup) when they scored to a hard fought but thoroughly deserved victory over a strong South Dublin Colleges outfit.
The conditions at Palmerstown were almost ideal, the only imperfection was a considerable cross wind that really didn’t favour either side. These teams had already met in the group stages, and on that occasion they played a draw.
All indications were that this was going to be a close match. That was exactly what transpired. From the outset the teams tore into it and traded scores with neither team able to dominate.
The hurling was competitive and was played in honest fashion. Referee Eamon Mansfield had no major interventions to make. Danny Bolger at centre-back began to dominate for the CBS. Up front Niall Mullins and Sean Moran showed up prominently and Evan Cody proved to be a rock at full-back.
At the break the CBS held sway and were ahead by three points, 0-7 to 0-4.
The second half produced enthralling, end to end stuff. The CBS dominated the early stages and stretched their lead to four points.
Dublin South hit back and scored 1-1 in a hectic five minutes to restore parity. Sean Moran steadied the ship for the CBS with a super point. He followed that with the score of the match. Showing neat footwork and searing pace, Moran blasted an unstoppable crossbar-height bullet to the Dublin net.
The goal gave a serious lift to the CBS. They protected the lead to the end in great fashion. There were several leaders on the day, but goalkeeper Darragh Holohan, full back Evan Cody, Danny Bolger at No. 6, Niall Mullins, Sean Moran and Gary Kelly in attack deserve special mention.
The CBS face North Dublin Colleges in the Leinster A final in Dr Cullen Park, Carlow tomorrow (Thursday) and mentors, Ivan Doherty, Paul O’Flynn and Alan Healy will be looking for more of the same from the players.
