Good third quarter does it for Club

Club Kilkenny 18 Berkeley 14

THE Club Kilkenny under-12 girls team recorded back-to-back victories against a strong Berkeley.

In the first quarter the teams scored four points each. Rebecca Rhatigan and Roisin O'Neill found the basket for Kilkenny, and replies were posted by Sorcha O'Connor and Kate Delahunty.

Only one basket was scored in the next quarter. Teresa Cassin put Berkeley 6–4 up at the interval.

After the break Kilkenny played some outstanding basketball. Leah O'Keeffe, Rachel Lynch and Chloe Edwards all shot important scores as they held Berkeley scoreless.

Going into the final quarter, Kilkenny led 14–6.

In the last quarter Kilkenny retained the advantage, and all on the panel playing their part in the victory. With the under-age rules stipulating that all players must play two quarters, this can only improve the general standard of play.

ST PATRICK'S retained their 100% record when they scored a dramatic win over Thomastown rivals, Berkeley in this ladies clash.

Both teams were in scoring form and registered a total of 31 points in the opening quarter. Dapyne Kennington, Claire Kelly and Cora McCarthy helping Berkeley shot 16 points.

The city girls had Gemma Fitzpatrick, Emer Phelan and Deirdre Wall on the mark in their total.

Lisa Farrell was introduced for the city team in the second quarter, and she made a difference to the scoring. With Natalie Walsh and Gemma Fitzpatrick also scoring, they turned the deficit into a lead 25–24 at half-time.

Ann Marie Gibbons and Mary Blanchfield contributedhandsomely for Berkeley with important scores.

After the break St Patrick's started to put daylight between themselves and the opposition. Michelle Heffernan got in on the scoring act as they shot14 points.

Berkeley managed nine points, and trailed 33-39 going into the final quarter.

The last quarter had everything in sport that sets the pulses racing. Looking comfortable with three minutes remaining and a ten point lead. things started to fall apart for the winners. Berkeley, following two successful free throws and eight points from Cora McCarthy, Ann Marie Gibbons and Bernie Halpin levelled the game as time fan out.

Lisa Farrell contributed four points from free throws to be St Patrick's only scorer during the final nine minutes.

With three minutes extra-time played, St Patrick's composed themselves. Lisa Farrell scored a two pointer and one free throw from the resulting foul. Bernie Halpin stole the ball on the half-way line and scored to put Berkeley within one point before Deirdre Wall was fouled.

The resulting two free throws were good, and Patrick's edged home by a mere two points.
