Seconds have League title in their sights

Kilkenny Seconds, the Leinster League leaders, went on the rampage on Saturday in Foulkstown when they faced second from bottom Roscrea. This was a one-sided affair. The winners put in a blistering performance in wet and slippery conditions.

Julian Hughes opened the scoring after only minutes with a fine penalty kick. Winger Rod Hogan extended the score six minutes later when he touched down following a powerful run through the Roscrea defence.

Hughes added the conversion. From the restart Kilkenny were judged to be offside and Roscrea kicked the penalty to give them their one score.

The winners kept up the pressure. Three minutes later big prop Eddie Brennan took control of the ball and with half of Roscrea on his back ploughed over the line to score a brilliant try. Hughes missed a difficult penalty kick just on half-time to leave the score at the break, 15-3.

Things got worse for Roscrea in the second half when captain Vinnie O’Shea crossed the line following a superb back line move. Barry Daly, who replaced the injured Hughes, added the conversion.

Ten minutes later hooker Emmet Lynch crossed the line. Daly again added the conversion. Moments later, with Kilkenny having fought their way back into the Roscrea 22, Daly did his trade-mark thing and kicked a superb drop goal.

With five minutes remaining Kilkenny added another superb try. Ronnie Moran touched down. Daly sealed the deal with a fine conversion kick.

This was a top class all round team effort. However, flanker Ronnie Moran, prop Eddie Brennan and outside centre Ger Flood played extremely well. Kilkenny look set to take the title again this year, but they have Portarlington left to play. A win is vital.

Kilkenny are away to Balbriggan on Sunday (3pm) in the first round of the Seconds Towns Cup.
