Seniors back and flying in spring like weather

After losing out to a frost covered course in early February, normal service was resumed for the New Ross golf club seniors group in spring like conditions last wee.

Another fine field comprising 15 teams went to post, all searching for the elusive prizes. Even though conditions were near perfect the scores were hard to come by and only the first three teams home managed to break the target of 90 points.

In fact, the eventual winners only managed 89 points, but seeing they were only a three person team they had the mandatory six extra points added giving them the spoils with a total of 95 points.

The team of Denis Kirwan (11), Willie Kelly (16) and that great veteran, Michael Martin, playing off 32, combined well to win. Second on 93 points were Joe O’Farrell (15), Aidan O’Connor (16), Sean O hUiginn (19) and Martin Burke (25).

The 90 points carded by Tony Harford (11), Dan Quigley (17), John Joe Murray (19) and Richie Byrne (23) was good enough to take third prize.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Richard Cahill (9th hole) and John Murphy on the 11th.

The sympathy of all members of the seniors group was extended to friend and colleague, Brian Dolan, on the recent bereavement of his mother in Dublin.

On the board for the remainder of February are the Tony Harford, Jimmy Furlong, Tom O’Shea and Larry Shannon with the draw for teams at 10.40am.
