Kilkenny handballers win eight Leinsters
LAST week was a very successful one for local handballers. Eight Leinster titles were won.
Handball
Richie Falsey gave the lead when he accounted for Frank Maddock, Wexford in three sets winning in the SMBS final. He won the decisive game 21-17. Canice Quigley claimed his second Masters B singles title when he made light work of the challenge of John Quinn, Wicklow.
Paddy Reilly finally got over the hurdle and collected the Diamond Maters singles final with an emphatic win over Eugene Kennedy.
Patrick Funchion and Ciaran Neary won the under-21 doubles crown while Marie Walsh and Rebecca Mulholland scored an impressive victory in the ladies junior doubles final, winning 21-6, 21-14.
There was no joy for Michael 'Ducksie' Walsh and D.J. Carey who lost out in the third game to Meath in the Masters doubles final. Elsewhere Jim Dooley came up short against Louth opposition. He will be hoping to go one step better this weekend when he enjoys home advantage in the doubles final.
Martin Lalor and Eugene Downey lost to Dublin in the silver Masters doubles, as did Brendan Hosey and Andrew Lawlor.
The County Board held their second One Wall county championship in Windgap on Sunday. There was a very good turn-out in the Masters grades.
Some great games were played. Thankfully the weather held up to allow for the smooth running of the competition. Nicholas Anthony claimed his second Open title, beating Ciaran Neary while Ger McGrath beat Dan Breen to win the Open Plate. Seamus Reade won the Masters B crown. Jimmy Purcell beat Eamonn Purcell to take the Masters A trophy.
In the Plate final Paul Dowling beat John Ryan. In the Masters B Plate final there was joy for Eddie English, who beat Michael O'Shea.
Congratulations to Windgap handball club for holding this great competition again for the second year. All participants complimented them for the excellence of the event and for providing refreshments throughout the day.
