Kilmacow do a lot right, but the results are eluding them

OTHER than Kilmacow supporters, there are many people who feel extremely sorry for the hurlers of Kilmacow, because they just cannot manage to win anything presently.

Tullogher- Rosbercon 1-13

Kilmacow 1-9

As the man said, they could't buy a win, such is the run of cruel luck being encountered.

They are doing many things properly. Their training and coaching is top class under the baton of Johnny Walsh and his band of lieutenants, but unfortunately for them they just seem to come up short on too many occasions.

So it was again in Ballyhale on Saturday when they found a tarter in Tullogher-Rosbercon as they endeavoured to capture the junior 'B' championship. For long periods they looked as if they were about to purge their recent bad luck demons, only to come up a little short.

Some day lads, some day your day will be full of sunshine.

Tullogher were out of blocks smartly. With Eddie Conway buzzing at midfield, they quickly racked up a three point lead before Kilmacow could draw their breath. It was Conway that struck the early three points.

It took Kilmacow a full eight minutes before they troubled the scorekeeper – have you seen the terrific electronic scoreboard on Ballyhale yet? It is a tremendous addition to the facility. Nicky Barron was the man who obliged, but it was still the men in black and amber who looked the more impressive.

At the end of the first quarter, Tullogher led by 0-6 to 0-2. Tullogher looked impressive.

But in the 20th minute, an error – his only one in the entire game- by the Tullogher goalkeeper saw the ball spilled. The alert Dec Gahan ghosted in to push it over the line.

Kilmacow got the kick-start they badly needed. By the 28th minute they were only a single point adrift and at half-time they were adrift by only two, and in a great place to win the game: Tullogher-Rosbercon 0-9, Kilmacow 1-4.

At the 45 minute stage they were a single point in arrears, but they had driven an unforgivable number of wides. Tullogher were hanging on the ropes.

Young Johnny Hayes (he is under 17) was playing a man's game at centre-forward. Martin Bookle and John 'Tinaree' Murphy – how I admire this man's tenacity, and Tullogher pride- were holding them together on the half back line. Mark O'Brien and Peter Meggs were taking route one towards the Kilmacow goal at every opportunity, but they were diminishing as the clock wound down.

Gary Heffernan too was hurling up a storm, and his abilities to catch dropping ball among the flying hurleys was surely inspirational. If his shooting could improve, he would be a very valuable asset indeed.

Just as it seemed that Kilmacow might get to the top of the hill, Tullogher substitute, Simon Kennedy nailed them with a heart-wrenching goal in the 56th minute. Good time for Tullogher. Terrible blow for Kilmacow.

Martin Tynan and Eddie Ivory came on to score late points for flagging Kilmacow, but the day belonged to Tullogher as Mark O'Brien clattered over a couple of insurance points to afford captain Bob Forristall the honour of collecting the trophy.
