More athletic medals for Kilkenny
THE third day of the All-Ireland Juvenile Track and Field Championships proved very successful outcome for Kilkenny athletes.
It was a very special day for both Sophie Parkinson (Gowran) and Paul Manning (St Joseph's), who collected their second gold medal of the championships.
Following on from her discus title, Parkinson claimed her second gold when she landed a throw of 11.55m in the under-17 shot-put competition. Manning, who claimed the 80m victory on the first weekend, won the under-14 200m in a time of 25.41 seconds. There was gold also for Tara Lacey (St Senan's), who worked hard to secure the spoils in the under-14 2,000m walk.
Cliodhna Manning (Kilkenny City Harriers - KCH) won silver in the under-16 200m final, finishing with a superb time of 25.5 seconds. Club-mates Laura Langton and Louise Holmes both won bronze in their respective 200m finals, Laura at under-18 and Louise at under-19. Diarmuid Hickey (Gowran), competing at under-17 level, won bronze in both the shot-put and discus. A further bronze went to St Joseph's athlete Shauna Power, in the under-18 3km walk.

Relay medals
Even more medals travelled back to Kilkenny when eight teams were among the winners at the national inter-club and inter-county relay finals, which were also held in Tullamore on Sunday. With five sets of medals going to KCH it was a happy bus-load that returned to Loughboy on Sunday evening.
While difficult to highlight individual performances in team competition there were some instances which merited special mention. Eimear O'Donoghue suffered an ankle injury in the heats of her team's event, but didn't reveal it until after putting in an improved performance in the final. Also worthy of mention was the acceleration on the second leg of their respective races by Aaron Barron in the boys' under-14 run and Cliodhna Manning in the girls' under-16 race - both athletes played a major part as their teams won medals. The same two teams were also well served by the determined effort of the runners on the last leg, Aidan Tuohy and Margaret Caldbeck. The performances of the under-19 team were also memorable, as Laura Langton, Mary Kate Lanigan, Naomi Ni Chleirigh and superb sprint finisher Louise Holmes scored victory in the 4x100m and 4x400m events.
The under-18 boys' team from St Joseph's were also impressive, making the finals in 4x100m and 4x400m and winning bronze in the latter. Two of their team Jack Saunders and Richard Schoemann teamed up with KCH duo Michael Lanigan and Ian Boland to take the bronze with the Kilkenny team in the inter-county race. Another partnership that proved successful was that of Aidan Tuohy (KCH), Sean O'Neill (Gowran) and Aaron Fenlon and Paul Manning (St Joseph's) as they secured silver medals in the inter-county under-14 race.
