Rugby cup season begins
Number 8 Ross Deacon in action against Glenstal Abbey
It is that time of year when schools rugby moves centre stage and culminates with schools aiming for a final on March 18 in Donnybrook.
Kilkenny College will play the winners of St Andrew’s v Wesley College on February 2 in Naas RFC. By way of preparation the college side has played Glenstal Abbey and St Munchin’s in their last two games. Having won the Leinster League in December, the college team captained by Shane Delahunt is looking forward to a good cup run.
The Kilkenny College Junior Cup team was defeated in Naas RFC by St Gerard’s on January 17.
The score at half time was 10–3 in favour of Kilkenny with tries from Andrew Conlan and Martin Mulhall and it looked like they would pull away. But Gerard’s were resilient, and mistakes from the Kilkenny defence allowed them in for three tries, bringing the score up to 20–10 in favour of the Bray school.
Kilkenny were rejuvenated by this, once they got over the shock of the tries they had conceded, but it was too little too late with a penalty from Peter Sunderland proving to be insignificant to the final result as Gerard’s finished with another try. The final score was 27–13.
This puts Kilkenny College into the plate competition, and expectations will be high for next year with a strong squad coming through.
