KILKENNY schools proved that soccer is alive and kicking in the county with two top class performances.

The Kilkenny CBS were among the big winners as they beat Tullow CS 8-0 to lift the under-20 Carlow/Kilkenny senior boys’ league Division One title.

The city side were quick out of the blocks in the final, which was played in Bagenalstown, dominating the game from the off. Their pressure quickly paid off, turning into goals as Cathal O’Leary (2) and Sean Maguire got on the scoresheet to open a commanding 3-0 lead by half-time.

The floodgates opened in the second half as the James Street school continued to go on the attack. Maguire made it 4-0 before Jason Hennessy grabbed another.

The Kilkenny school were rampant now and wrapped up an emphatic win with further strikes from Joe Keoghane and captain Nathan West before an individual effort from Evans Wallace proved to be the icing on the cake.

The CBS team will now play the winners of the Midlands section in the next round.

Elsewhere the Loreto Secondary School advanced to the Leinster quarter-finals when they dismantled Dublin outfit Rathcoole 8-0 at Scanlon Park.

Just like the CBS the Loreto were quick out of the blocks and took control of the game within five minutes, a Kirsty Maher volley giving them a lead they would never relinquish.

Constantly creating chances, it took the Kilkenny side just four minutes to double their lead. Megan O’Keeffe set up Laura Murphy, who made no mistake with a well-placed shot to the corner of the net. A brace from Jenny Clifford ensured the Loreto took a 4-0 lead in at half-time.

Clifford ensured an impressive afternoon when she completed her hat-trick within minutes of the restart. The Loreto kept their foot on the gas, showing great determination as they continued to battle for possession in a tight midfield. Sarah Kent kept the scoring going one-way when she bagged a brace, the first of which was a bullet-strike, before Laura Greene blasted home an incredible eighth goal with a powerful shot from outside the box that flew into the top corner of the net.
