Hayes grabs timely winner for ’Booters

THE race for the title is still tight at the top, but Freebooters A needed some good fortune to stay there.
“In truth we were a little lucky to win,” was the honest opinion of Blues boss Sean Doyle after his side got the better of the Lions in a close 2-1 encounter at the Fair Green.
“We scored the winner with just five minutes to go against what was a very good Lions side,” he added. “They have improved greatly since we played them earlier in the season. I’m glad we played them at home as I wouldn’t like to have to go to Durrow now to get a result against them.”
In what was an even first half ’Booters took the lead on 25 minutes when Greg Morton hit the opener. The striker was set up by Neil Murtagh, who broke through before unselfishly squaring the ball to his team-mate.
Freebooters had other chances to increase their lead, but failing to do so looked costly when the visitors drew level with ten minutes to go. However, an 85th minute Dessie Hayes free, which curled round the Durrow wall, proved enough to give the Blues their first league win of 2012.
“It was a tough game, but that’s what we needed to get back on track,” added Doyle.
Elsewhere cross-city rivals Evergreen B and Freebooters B played out a 1-1 draw at Scanlon Park.
Niall Kiely was on the mark for the visitors, running in to finish a Paddy Kiely cross in the opening half hour. However, Derrick Kenny’s side were hauled back when Chris Traynor drew Evergreen level on 60 minutes. Gary Owens was the provider, threading a through ball for Traynor, who spun his man and finished well.
“It was a decent game in blustery conditions,” said Evergreen boss Ollie Walsh. “We were happy with the result, especially as we’ve found it hard to get our rhythm going with so many weeks off of late.”
