Ryan grabs winner for rallying Rangers

FORT Rangers grabbed their second win in a row to ease their Premier Division relegation woes, but boy did they do it the hard way!
Dermot Ryan’s 80th minute header proved decisive as the Wallslough side came from behind to beat East End United A 2-1 on a wet and windy Sunday morning and move into a position of mid-table security.
“That was a massive win for us,” admitted Fort boss Jim Cashin afterwards. “It was played in some of the worst conditions I’ve ever seen for soccer, which made for some tough going.”
The teams took some time to get to grips with the conditions, but it was the visitors who struck first. Fort failed to deal with a probing cross and paid a heavy price as James Brennan pounced to turn a loose ball home on 25 minutes.
United held that advantage until half-time. They almost doubled it before the break, but Nicky Cleere’s long range shot was well kept out by Rangers netminder Davy Buggy.
The hosts came back into the game in the second half, but had to wait until after the hour to make their pressure count. John Brett did just that, converting a penalty with 25 minutes to go after Kenny Morris had been felled in the box.
Rangers were on the front foot after that, but had to wait until the 80th minute for the winner. Dermot Ryan did the damage, coming up from the back to nod home Edward Nugent’s corner.
Fort have little time to relax, as next Sunday brings another potential six-pointer. They will travel to Goresbridge to play second-from-bottom Bridge United A (kick-off 11am) who, although they have games in hand, will be looking for a win to banish their own relegation worries.
“The result has given us two wins in a row, which is a huge shot in the arm,” added Cashin. “We’re still far from safe, but we’ve given ourselves a fighting chance.”
The Fort v East End clash was the only top flight action of the weekend. The game between Deen Celtic A and Freebooters B, scheduled to be held in Castlecomer, was one of the many ties to be washed out by Sunday’s heavy rainfall. Derrick Kenny’s Blues will be back on the road this Sunday when they travel to Durrow to face the Lions.
