Strong finish sees 'Boro safely through

DICKSBORO qualified for the quarter-finals of the Northern junior championship when they saw off the challenge of a disappointing St Lachtain's (Freshford) in a rather lacklustre game.

Dicksboro 1-10

St Lachtain's 1-6

In a match that had very few highlights the city side finished strongly in Ballyragget, setting up a last eight clash with St Martin's in mid-September.

St Lachtain's opened brightly and went into a three-point lead (0-3 to 0-0) after just three minutes thanks to points from James Meagher (2) and a long range effort from centre-back Liam Darcy. Dicksboro's lively corner-forward David Ryan got the city side off the mark in the fifth minute, but Jonathan Doheny restored Freshford's three-point lead in the tenth minute.

Dicksboro were coming more into the game at this stage and Jessie Watters fired over a point in the 11th minute to keep his side in touch. However, they were guilty of some poor finishing and spurned some good scoring chances over the next few minutes before Dan O'Neill pointed an 18th minute free. A foul on Darragh Buggy resulted in another pointed free for O'Neill soon after before David Ryan fired over his second point in injury-time to put Dicksboro in front for the first time (0-6 to 0-5).

Short-lived lead

The lead was short-lived. Within 20 seconds of the restart James Meagher had the sliotar in the 'Boro net, shooting his side back into the lead. James Watters hit back with a point for the Palmerstown men before Liam Darcy pointed another long range effort in the 33rd minute to keep Lachtain's two points clear (1-6 to 0-7).

Little did they know it, but that was to be the Freshford side's last score. They almost grabbed what could have been a decisive score in the 35th minute, but Dicksboro goalkeeper Cillian Breathnach denied James Meagher what looked like a certain goal with a great save.

Both sides were then guilty of some very poor finishing until Dan O'Neill cracked home a goal for the 'Boro after a Michael Rafter piledriver had rebounded off the crossbar.

From there on it was all Dicksboro. David Ryan knocked over a fine effort in the 52nd minute swiftly followed by a Dan O'Neill free two minutes later. O'Neill completed the scoring with a point from a penalty in the 58th minute.
