The Village and Muckalee eye junior glory
WILL IT be a double or the chance to get some revenge?
That's the lure for the ladies from James Stephens and Muckalee, who will renew rivalries when they meet in the junior football county final in Bennettsbridge on Sunday (throw-in 7.30pm).
The city side will have their eyes fixed firmly on grabbing their second piece of silverware, having already beaten Muckalee in the league final in May - the Village won that game by 2-5 to 0-4. They will look to Aoife Gorey and Orla McCormack for match-winning scores while Niamh Butler and Vicky Cahill will run a tight ship at the back. Muckalee have a solid defence, led by Anne-Marie Walsh at full-back and Martina Maher and Orla Walsh will drive the North Kilkenny side forward at every opportunity, with forwards Margo O'Neill and Mary Rose Lyng capable of causing an upset.
While both sides will take part in a shield competition with some of the senior teams in August, the newly crowned junior champions can look forward to their debut in the Leinster junior club championship. The Kilkenny winners will play their Westmeath counterparts on September 18, and will hope to follow in the footsteps of Railyard, who won the title in 2004.
Senior favourites
Thomastown installed themselves as favourites to claim this year's senior title with a 3-5 to 2-2 win over Railyard in round three of the championship. The Railyard girls have had the upper hand over Thomastown in recent years, with the sides contesting the last three senior finals, but the girls in blue and white got some revenge as goals from Jenny Reddy and Shauna Carroll paved the way for a deserved victory.
Tullogher grabbed their first win of the campaign with a 5-5 to 1-1 win over neighbours Mullinavat and set up an interesting final round of games. Thomastown and Freshford, who are assured of semi-final spots, meet in Thomastown this evening (Wednesday) while Railyard make the journey to Mullinavat.
A much changed Railyard side will have to secure a win to ensure they and Tullogher progress to the semi-finals. A win for Mullinavat will put them into a three-way play-off with Railyard and Tullogher for the remaining two semi-final berths.
Blitzes
An under-16 football blitz will be held on Saturday at O'Loughlin Gaels GAA club, with the action getting underway at 10am. All under 16 girls who are registered with clubs are invited to attend and if any club has difficulty fielding a team on their own teams will be amalgamated to ensure all players get to participate. A penalty kick and long kick competition will also be held on the day.
Kilkenny will travel to Carlow for the annual Leinster under-14 blitz on Bank Holiday Monday. Kilkenny, who won the Division Three title last year, will compete in Division Two of the competition, which will be held at the Carlow hurling grounds, and will go up against Longford, Offaly, Wicklow and Meath B. All clubs please make sure names of players available to travel are forwarded this week.
