The Rower/Inistioge dig deep for new centre

A DECADE of generosity has helped a sporting club, and a community, find a new home.

A DECADE of generosity has helped a sporting club, and a community, find a new home.

Thanks to the hard work of the locality, Inistioge has been boosted by the construction of a new base for their GAA club, and a home for all community activities.

The drive to raise money started ten years ago, when the Rower-Inistioge GAA club started their golf classic. Over the decade the event has raised close to €220,000, funds which have been used for the development of the field facilities in Inistioge and The Rower.

In recent years the Classic committee decided to press on and buy a site for the GAA club dressing-rooms and Community Centre. The golf classic has been used to help replay the loan and following this year's event - the 2010 profit amounted to €25,000 - a cheque for loan repayments was presented to the GAA club at a function in Lenehan's Pub, Inistioge recently.

The Community Centre is now fully built, but completion of the inside work was delayed while awaiting confirmation of a Leader Grant. With the Grant now approved, the committee are confident that the centre will be fully functioning by December. The four new dressing-rooms have already been opened and are in use by all the club teams.

Creative ideas

The community has been highly creative in terms of coming up with ideas to raisE money for the cause. Many successful fund-raising projects have been operating in the parish for the last number of years by the GAA club and the Inistioge Community Centre Committee, including the annual field day and the outdoor band concert.

The entire parish also got behind the movement and has supported the door-to-door 'Euro a Day' scheme, which is still ongoing.

Another scheme saw a request go out to all parish organisations, who were invited to sponsor various parts of the building. The Inistioge Church Choir/In Caelo Choral Group were one of the first groups off the mark, producing a double CD which featured both choirs. The release raised €6,000, enough to sponsor a stage for the building.

A cheque for that amount was also presented at the recent function. At the same time the Inistioge Golfing Society presented a cheque for the same amount, which will see them sponsor one of the dressing-rooms. The ICA is also working hard to raise funds to sponsor the kitchen, as are the Inistioge Vintage Rally for the meeting room. The Rower-Inistioge camogie club will also sponsor a dressing-room. A number of local companies and individuals have already committed to sponsor other sections of the building.

A great night of celebration, with a barbecue and sing-song featuring local musicians, was held after the presentation.
