Walsh (junior) is the monthly medal winner and Barton team ready for action

PETER Walsh (junior), playing off 7 handicap, won the July monthly medal with a 66. Peter was out in 38 strokes and back in 35 for a gross score of 73.

A hat-trick of birdies on the 14th,15th and 16th saw him level par on the back nine. He edged out Kevin Hennessy (16) and Noel O’Sullivan (17), who both also returned 66. Peter shot a good round recently in the Junior Scratch Cup and his form is obviously holding.

The gross prize was won by Kieran Wall (6) with a 73 gross and some 68’s failed to get in the prizes.

The winner of the men’s senior Open singles on Wednesday was J.J. Walsh (8), Carrick-on-Suir with 40 points. He edged out Martin Mullane (12) on the back nine. Martin was only one over par at the turn and had 23 points, but he only managed to add 17 on the back nine. J.J. had a split of 21 and 19.

The presentation of prizes will be on Friday, August 6 (10pm).

Denis Carey (12) with 43 points was the winner of Captain Charlie Phelan’s prize to the seniors. Denis, with birdies on the 5th and 12th and 12 pars, scored 21 points on the front and 22 points on the back nine. Denis had three points to spare over Jimmy Rhatigan (16) on 40 points.John O Leary (18) was third, also on 40.

The winners of the team event section with 64 points were Martin Mullane (12), Michael O’Neill (19), Tom Brett (16) and Paddy Byrne (20).

This weekend is the Open Captain’s charity weekend on Saturday and Sunday. It is a four person team event with the best two scores to count. Entry is €10 per member and €15 per visitor.

There will be a nine hole putting competition run in conjunction with the weekend. Entry fee €2. This competition will be let run for a couple of weeks.

Bank Holiday Monday will feature an Open two person scramble. All these competitions are bookable online or through the office. The next ladies and gents Open singles will be on Wednesday, August 4.

The Open Week four person team event on Monday, June 7 which was cancelled due to adverse weather has been rescheduled for Saturday week. Those who paid the entrance fee have free entry. The competition is open for booking online.

The winners in the Homecare Classic on Friday were the T.C. Tyres team of Gerry Madden (20), Tony McCarthy (11), Alan Snype (16) and Jim Meredith (17) with 91 points.

MEN’S INTER-CLUB: The men’s Barton Shield team will defend the Leinster title in Dunlaoighaire golf club this weekend. They will take on NUI Maynooth in the quarter-final at 8.30am on Friday. The semi-final will be played on Friday at 1.45pm.

The final is scheduled for Saturday 10am.

The players have been working hard on their game with the help of club professional Jimmy Bolger. Kilkenny are the only club to have qualified for the Leinster finals in both the Barton Shield and Senior Cup this year. These are the two premier club team competitions in men’s amateur golf.

Five of the Barton Shield panel headed to the South of Ireland championship in Lahinch at the weekend. Graham Nugent, Craig Martin and Paul O’Hara all won through the first three rounds to reach the last 32.

Graham and Craig lost on Monday afternoon but Paul won. He has progressed to the last 16 where he will play C. Daly from Castletroy.

The full Barton Shield draw is - Friday (8am) Lucan Woodlands; semi-final 1.30pm; final on Saturday 10am.

The Brennan Cup team play Coolattin in the semi-final in Kilkenny on Thursday, August 12 (4pm). The team is Cormac Hickey and Luke Wall, Pat Butler and Pat McEvoy, Brendan Power and Colin Furlong, Denis Brophy and Aidan Phelan and Derek Shelley and Michael Raggett. Reserves: Kevin Browne and John Martin.

The ladies senior foursomes team reached the semi-final of the competition and will take on Woodenbridge in New Ross on Saturday, August 14 (12.40pm).

Chipping practice has been organised for today (Wednesday) at 7pm on the practice green at the 9th tee box.

CLUB MATCHPLAY: Some matches in the various competitions are still outstanding and are past the due date for completion. Those outstanding are asked to complete them as soon as possible.

Jo Lawlor shot a hole in one with a six iron on the 6th recently in her mixed match with partner Seamus Rochford. Jo and Seamus went on to defeat Liam and Sandra Barrett to reach the last eight.

SOCIAL GOLF: There will be a 13 hole mixed social golf competition on Friday evening. Shotgun start at 5.30pm. Those taking part are requested to turn up at 5.15 to sign in.

JUNIOR GOLF: Outings have been organised to Wexford golf club on Tuesday, August 3 and Rosslare on Monday, August 16. Those intending to travel are requested to put their names on Wexford sheet by Thursday 29 and Rosslare sheet by Sunday. The sheets are posted on the junior/juvenile notice board.
