THE RULE OF ELEVEN AND DECLARER - The Rule of 11 can work also to
declarer’s benefit. Declarer can calculate how many cards higher than the card led
are held by right-hand opponent. Occasionally applying the rule of 11 can result
in a dramatic result. West leads the 4 diamonds against your 3 NT. Dummy goes
down and you see: Dummy - Spade A54 Heart 654 Diamond A1073 Club A65. Lead
Diamond 4. Declarer – Spade K32 Heart AQ3 Diamond Q85 Club K432.Count tricks:
2 Spades, 1 Heart, 2 Diamonds (on the lead) and 2 Clubs; total 7.If the Heart finesse
works that comes to 8. You could try giving up a club trick early and if opponents’
clubs divide 3-3 you will get 3 club tricks. Seems you need the heart finesse in
addition to a favourable divide in clubs. But wait! Apply the rule of 11. Diamond
4 lead; subtract 4 from 11; result 7. There are 7 cards higher than the 4 between
dummy, your hand and East. You can see 6 of them: dummy’s Ace, ten, seven and
your own Queen, 8 and 5. So, East has only one card higher than the 4. You play the
3 from dummy; East plays the Jack. What did the Rule of 11 tell you? That East has
only one card higher than the 4. And she has just played it. West has the remaining
relevant cards. So, how many diamond tricks you will make? Knowing that West has
the King, nine and six sandwiched between your hand and dummy, you will make 4
diamond tricks. Will show you the full deal next week so keep the above…..

WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT BRIDGE AND FORGOT - Learning From A Poor
Suit. (contd.) West led the Diamond 7 which we recognise as MUD, the middle of
three small cards (Middle – Up- Down). Had West held 8752 she would still have led
the 7. The traditional approach to leading from a poor suit was to lead the highest card
(Top of Nothing). However, the modern approach is to lead the SECOND HIGHEST
from a poor suit; the seven from 973; 9753; 97532 and so on. The thinking is that a
card such as the nine or eight should not be wasted to follow a blind principle, top
of nothing. Retaining a high-spot card may prevent declarer winning a trick with a
smaller card later in the play. Next week The Rule of Eleven and Declarer.
RESULTS AND NEWS - Bridge results and news from city and county affiliated
